Title: What brand/type is this please
Post by tds bob on Oct 8th, 2016 at 1:17pm
Hi everyone.

I came across this camp oven today and I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on who made it and an approximate age if possible?

Thanks

Yeah it will. The inside is perfect, just the light rust on the outside.
It has a similar shape and look to my Fremantle foundry camp oven but I've never seen that writing on a lid before. Also the lid 'handle' doesn't have a hole in it, if that makes sense.
I'm picked it up here in Geraldton WA so the Newman WA lettering refers to the town I'm guessing.

Sure does make sense, just finished a Resto myself of a "Scandia W.A" Camp oven with what you are talking about if you want to compare :)

Might be just personalised, last name or something. Isn't Newman the name of a big mine over there? The similarities to another brand maybe more than coincidental. Just saying.

It's a town (mining town) in the Pilbara.

Could you post up a photo of the bottom of the Newman oven, so that it can be compared to the Scandia that Guss has just restored.

Derek gets this weeks Gold star. Looks like you could get what ever you wanted written on them.
Who ever made them made Scandia to.

Well the Mrs has told me when she bought me the Scandia the bloke she got it from sounded like he was maybe in his  70's,....and he recons that he can remember it always being used down on his folks farm when he was a little tacker.
So if that is anything to go by... your Newman "may" be "approx" 60-70 years old?
Someone else may be able to narrow it down for you but at least you now have a starting point  :)

At the risk of destroying its originality I would drill a hole through the tab on the lid and put a ring through that made from 6mm rod, makes it easy to lift the lid off, I've done that on a couple of similar ovens I have.
As to age I would guess post war, so maybe 70 years old or less, very much like the E&G Foundry oven I have.

Rob.

Nice Pot.
Should be a beauty after a good clean.
