Title: Bear’s Cooking Pit
Post by Bear on May 3rd, 2020 at 10:54am
The other week I got hold of a half gas bottle pit, not sure what wave length the original owner was on but certainly not mine.

Spent a bit of time cutting the junk that had been cocky sh*ted on and cleaned up the rough edges.

Marked out where I wanted it to go and dug down until I hit clay. So now I will pack some cracker dust in give it a brick edge and finally be able to set up the ovens. More to come.

Isn't it interesting to see what we are all getting up to now we are in lockdown. I've been cooking main meals in the CO most days and regularly doing dampers, got a fruit and nut damper going right now.
Don't have room for a fire pit so made a stainless steel beer keg Weber copy instead, posted the pics earlier. Missus is so bored she has put up the Christmas decorations already.

I’ve been generally busy most days.  Frequent trips to Bunnings for more materials. And of course the frequent cooks with the COs.
Don’t know how people can be bored.

If I am honest, this isolation stuff has made very little difference for me, day to day.

I don't miss the commute and I was already working from home two or three days a week.

So this means I don't quite understand where everyone seems to be getting the extra time from...

I have been unable to get to bunnings  I don't want to trust my luck.  to travel the extra few ks.
the work shop in the village is open but only one person at a time but I have not been worried about making any camp oven stirrers , or cutting boards as I have been doing  our cooking and caring for the wife.

Good so far Robert.

Maggie and I exercised our constitutional right today and went for a drive within the regulated maximum 50 kilometres.

It is amazing how short a distance that is.

Look forward to seeing the final product. I have a vision of what you're doing in my head and it looks good. A permanent fire pit is on my list of things to do. Just struggling on what kind of design I'm going to go ahead with

In the mood for a fire that won’t fail me.
No cooking as the wife beat me to it in the kitchen.

Might just sit around it quietly with a drink.

Managed to get the cracker dust base down today and leveled off. Will measure up tomorrow but think I may need to widen by a foot and around the same for the length.

Would like to put a area on the end for the podji pot, will see tomorrow.

3 legs Derek
1 at the front and 2 at the back. All angled out.
Very stable unit. Just have to use small pine to start and then small hardwood to follow.
Very good for cooking with flat based camp ovens and doing wet dishes.

I find my stove (the same brand as Aart's stove very easy to set up and fold away. I would have like a 'oz pig' as it would have fitted within my plan I had at the time.

I've got the same Kings brand stove.  I couldn't justify the expenditure on an OzPig.

I have only used it with spun steel camp ovens but it does the job.

If we ever enact the plan to pack up and go travelling in Oz, then an OzPig will come into the frame - but for occasional trips it's a no go.

Managed to pick up a old 4 burner bbq and a kettle bbq as well.
Legs on the kettle were rusted so I will clean it up and set it into a table. Will most likely use as a smoker hot and cold.

The gas one I am not sure if I will spend the time on mainly wanted the two plates which fit nicely in the 1/2 gas cylinder pit.

Need to find some one to lay three high of bricks around the in-ground pit. Not physically capable to do it myself.

Ok bought the bricks last week but still waiting for the S.I.L to say he has a brick layer for me. Think I will be tracking one down myself.

Today I started going over my gear re cleaning and reasoning.
Will be doing a trip up to the riverlands for a couple of days so hoping to do some cooking.

Found out the Aldi chimney is a smaller diameter than the Heat bead chimney and dose not allow the fire starter ring to be used. Started the beads on the little gas stove and then shifted to the chimney blower to give them a blast.

Also cleaned the jaffle iron up and cooked a couple for lunch so had to clean it again. All in all it was a enjoyable few hours just tinkering around with a lot of gear. Cheers

Not the cooking pit but last nights effort. Went to Loxton to visit friends and took a spicy bean meal I did on Thursday.

As the pot belly stove was going I just put the camp oven with the meal on top and did a slow reheat with a glass of red. CO did not fully sit on top but gave a half durn every 5 minutes to ensure a good reheat.

An excellent meal if I do say myself as this one is my recipe to suit Australian taste.

Hey Bear,

In the image which has the fire pit, it looks like you have a container under the frying pan.  Is that something like an old frying pan that you put the charcoal in?

If so, does it breathe ok or have you 'perforated' it?

Hi Bear
It is good to see the pot belly stove in use.
Had a Masport "Fatso"  many moons ago
Brings back great memories. glad you enjoyed the time.

Rab it is an old frying pan just to hold the heat beads. Seems to work ok. Need to get another mesh to lay across the original one as the beads would fall through after they have burnt for a while then I can do away with the pan.

Kevvie been a couple of good relaxing days, doing lamb shanks in red wine at the moment. Cheers

Thanks Bear.

I have what looks like the same pit and suspected that the beads would disappear prematurely as the grill is fairly widely spaced.
