Title: Butter Post by Derek on Oct 17th, 2025 at 12:06pm
I usually buy the Woolies home brand butter to use in cooking and was surprised the other day to find none available on the shelves.
They had replaced it with a brand called Hillview. Same price as the home brand. Was surprised when I opened it to find the butter was white and not the usual yellow colour of butter. Looked at the label and was surprised to see it is from the USA. Ingredients are just cream and salt but wonder why a different colour. I am not complaining as it seems a good product and the taste is . . . . . . well, just butter. It always stuns me how the world changes. As a kid part of my growing up was on a dairy farm where we sent cream in to get made into butter. I did a school excursion once to the Gympie Butter Factory and still remember the big wooden 56 lb butter boxes that were sent all over the world. IMG_5044.jpeg (182 KB | 15

Hi Derek
It is a shame about the butter. I have been getting butter from Aldi for Lesley and it is yellow. it is made in Australia I believe the cheese is made by Bega regards Kev |

I vaguely recall that it is because the dairy cattle are all feedlot raised so are grain fed. They do not graze on grass or other natural vegetation.

I buy from Aldi as well as it is Australian while Woolies was from NZ. I never buy stuff from the states due to their heavy chemical use.
As for the colour this may help. American butter is often white because it is made from the milk of cows that are fed a diet of grains and dried hay, which is low in beta-carotene. The yellow color in butter comes from beta-carotene, a pigment cows get from grazing on green grass. Cows that eat a lot of green pasture, common in other parts of the world, produce butter that is more yellow. |

I didn’t even know the Woolies butter was from NZ. Been buying it forever.

Both the 250 & 500g were from NZ then about 12months ago I think it was the 250g was Aussie.
Use to buy myself for years till I noticed they were using NZ butter. With the US being feed mostly grain feed I question the amount of chemicals in the grain. |
