I was sitting listening to the radio and they announced that Migaloo had been sighted south of the Gold Coast and was heading north so said to Maggie, let’s go and we bolted for the coast.  :)

Is that a newish thing at Archer Point Derek?
Im sure Ive been there more than once but didnt see it.
But then I didnt go to the end of the track either ...only as far as the old rotting wharf for a fish.
Maybe I should have gone further up the track.

Rory, there was always a lighthouse there on the high point just north of the old jetty.

The original was an old wooden structure that was demolished in mid seventies I believe.  Photo below of it from 1917.  Was a timber covered in corrugated iron apparently.

I certainly do not remember anything of it when I was there in the 60’s but do remember we drove up to it.

Maggie and my first night out in our then new caravan in 2012.  This was Beardy Creek Rest Area just north of Glenn Innes.

Temperature got down to minus 6.5 degrees that morning and the ground was frozen.  Couple of weeks later I installed a diesel heater.

Who can forget the Thora Port.  Photo taken in 2012. 

We had a couple of COG’s at Roses Park beside the Thora General Store that sold the port.  They also had a keg of the stuff where you could get your own bottles filled however it is no longer available.

It was a bit of a rough drink but not the worst I have tried over the years.   ;D

What was, back then, a small rest area at Edgeroi south of Moree on the Newell Highway.  All gone now.  I recall we had fish and chips at the little shop, also now gone.  We are the caravan and red Ute on the left - 2013.

This was our first visit here and the place is now one of our favourite places.

This was our first effort at free camping at Woolomin in the Peel Valley below Tamworth in 2013.

No facilities and we stayed there for just on two weeks.

Water in buckets from the creek for washing clothes by hand and a couple of trips to Tamworth to fill up drums for drinking water.  A very primitive battery and solar system on the caravan that actually worked well.

These photos are pre-COCIA, around 2004.

I am using an old Sunbeam frying pan and a Bedourie Camp Oven on a glass top table on the patio of a unit I had at Ashgrove in Queensland.

This was the beginning of the creation of the Heatbead Charts and back when I realised you can cook anything in a camp oven.

The recipe was chocolate rum and raisin muffins.

Chaffey Dam in the Peel Vally south of Tamworth - 2015.

Not all that long after this the lifted the dam wall and the next time we went back this site not far from the waters edge was under water.

A free camp on the Darling River called Mays Bend about 10 kilometres north of Bourke, NSW - 2017

I really was after a Murray Cod or a nice Yellowbelly but all I caught was a stinking Carp.

Did manage a good feed for breakfast on the Ozpig though.

Do many people eat carp. I have heard a lot of people catch them and just leave them on the ground.

I have never eaten them.  To my knowledge they are full of bones and taste like mud.

It is illegal to release them back in the water.

Standley Chasm in the West McDonnell Ranges in the NT is one of those places you really need to stand in to appreciate it properly.  We were there in 2025.
