Title: UMI Ltd Brisbane
Post by LG on Apr 7th, 2013 at 2:22am
Derek... please move to another section if I have posted in the wrong bit   :)

Spotted this camp oven while in Margaret River, WA.
Was part of a 'vintage tools' type display around the walls of the change room in a workwear shop
As far as I know, it is not for sale... but I can pass on the phone number if you want to try your luck.  :D

Forgot to say...

The writing on the side said  UMI Ltd Brisbane.   I didn't see any other writing anywhere
The inside felt a bit tacky (like oil residue) and looked OK.
The outside wasn't too bad either but the lid is a bit flaky
I would say it is about a 10" - comparing it to the size of my 4.5qt oven
3 little legs and a bail.

I couldn't say for sure pd...
The photos don't do it justice (little mobile phone jobbie). Sorry about that!

The lass at the shop didn't really know much about it.
She was surprised at how heavy it was.
I don't think she's actually handled cast iron before.

From memory the legs were about an inch long...
I wasn't sure - are supposed to be pointy, or flat like the photo shows?
I've only ever seen flat ones in real life but have seen some quite pointed ones in photos

I have a 12" UMI Camp Oven with lid (United Metal Industries - Brisbane) in 1924 they amalgamated Hockley's Maryborough and Ruthnings Woolloongabba Brisbane operations in to a new factory at Cooparoo in Brisbane. They sold out to Malleys in 1960/61 who later sold to Simpson and closed1983. UMI made laundry trollies, clothes washing gear, stoves, electrical appliances (things that lasted a true lifetime). I received my CO in Warwick around 1972. It was old then rusted outside new inside.

They were a nice oven.  Pity Sharon’s photos are no longer available.

I think Jeff (Challey) has researched them quite well.
