Flushing toilets at every camp. What a woose. have you got a sensitive bum ?

Can't see any other campers. Are you the unsociable type ?

Or are you one of those snobby type campers ?

Are you too scared to free camp ?

Sorry about the negative type queries, but I am a jealous barstard  :D :D :D

Rick.....at 2c I like my fan heater..though tonight we may have a campfire... ;D

Would love to see some pics of Hynes Camping Reserve.

It was very dry back in 2006. Have thought about going back there a few times.

Here's a link to  that trip.

Thanks for the pics Dave. There were no caravans on site when we were last there.

But in drought, there was no water to attract the fishermen.

The vics are spoilt in their choice of camping areas.

Thanks for the report and photos Dave.
I trust that the Pajero is a diesel.

How do you find it mate.
The bride and I are starting to look at the next tug.
Pajeros are very reasonably priced at present.

Aart ours is a 2005 NP turbo diesel 3.2lt we only get 13.8l/100klm towing our small van...when we get home I'm going to upgrade the suspension with heavier springs and a 40mm lift.....great vehicle.the later models can tow 3ton.ours is 2.5

Was reading up on this before as we too are considering an upgrade from the Colorado.  Even though the new models have towing for 3 tonne, the ball weight on them is only 180 kg which seems weird to me.

We currently have a low ball down weight on the van (108 kg tare) so would be ok but that could restrict you with a different van.

Safe travels and please keep the updates coming.

10 bucks for power is pretty darn good.

You don't get as good a campsite though as you would unpowered.

I have a folder I made up before coming to Vic with at least 60 free camp sites in West Vic.......we havent scratched surface in camping locations......most places we been to like Brim are not CPs but more like bush camps with power...at $10 why not use them..CPs are around $25 a night

Thanks for the fantastic photos and details of some great places to visit.   :)
Looking forward to your Flinders Ranges trip - it's been over 30 years since I was anywhere near there.

Can't believe the prices you pay over there ... $55 for a week   :o  :o  :o
Some places here we pay that Per Night!

I think the cheapest I've ever been quoted in WA's South West was $28 for 2 adults in an unpowered tent site, and $8 extra for each school aged child, even though they would be in the same 6man tent as us.   :'(

Of course our Department of Parks and Wildlife (formerly DEC) camping loops are a lot cheaper but all you get in them is a smelly long drop toilet.  No water, no showers and certainly no laundry.

Hey† Smokey,

Had a fair bit of 12v work done there over the years, even though it is over 400k's from home. No affiliation what so ever ,(just a happy customer).

Would you know if a bloke by the name of Greg (R ?) still works there or has retired ?

Send an email if you wish,

Regards Gaz

Post by Smokeydk on Mar 14th, 2014 at 7:22pm
Gaz....if he is short...thick set with beard.he is still there.

Day 1..
After having solar panel fitted..we headed off over the boarder via Lameroo...staying night at Murrayville CP $10 night powered site.

Day 2..
Well we left around 9:30am and headed east...didnt matter where we went ...CMCA Motorhomes were on the move to join up at Robinvale end of the month......so after 220klm we ended up today at Brim....we been here several times last year...again $10 night powered
But on arrival...yep more motorhomes arrived....I didnt count on them coming this far south....well we are staying here till next monday....then off who knows where....Watched 2 taunty frog mouths while getting dinner ready...

Sounds like you are having fun Dave.

Thankfully we missed a bad storm last night at Armidale which had strong winds and a lot of hail. We were at a free camp just north of Glen Innes and while we had a storm it wasn't a bad one.

We hope to be in Vic around the end of the month. We plan to get to Broke for next weekends COG.

Nahhhhhh got to get some work done on the caravan first. Thinking of under slinging the axle might get more van body clearance ... Also get it serviced too...plus it wore out another tyre,....scrubbed out think something might be bent on door side as its second tyre there in 8 months

G'day Dave, we are leaving in a few days time for northern Vic, I wish you would print out a list of your free camps, you gave me a few at Ratzcastle which were good but I need MORE.
As to you scrubbing out tyres on one side, I would say you have a bent stub axle, when you take the axle out to under sling it have it checked. Rob.

Post by Chally on Oct 19th, 2014 at 7:20pm
I agree with Poddy about the bent stub axel. Under slinging the axel makes a big difference for clearance and is one of the best things we have done to our van.

G'day Dave. Got home last week from several weeks in Western Vic and visited many of the sites you suggested, not impressed with Batyo Catyo, 45 deg and very windy, scary actually with no one else around. Also went back to Ratzcastle, one other camper there and it turned out we knew them from a club we're in, small world ! Saw a large brown snake (6' ?) near the water tank so were very careful after that. You didn't leave a partial upper plate in the shower did you ? Someone did, I'll bet that spoiled their day.
Also went to Brim, all those western area places very hot and dry but good this time of year.

Rob.

I remember it well as it still had the manual bankcard hand machine that couldn't detect that I was up to my limit  :D :D

Even shouted ourselves a cabin that night  ;D

Thought you would have extended your trip to include Easter Dave?

We have one of the canvas bag types of shower that you fill and hang from a tree. I usually get wet and then  turn the water off, lather up, then rinse off. But its quite amazing how long it actually lasts, even if you don't turn it off. I even made up a arm that hooks onto the roof rack of our 4x4 and hang it off that, just in case there isn't any trees around. I'll try and find a photo of it and post it soon.

November 11th Last trip this year

Wednesday Day1
We headed off early a different way...this time through Milang to Langhorne Creek..over the ferry at Wellington...down through Meningie then across to Coonalpyn then down to Bordertown

We had a look at the free camp area by the lake but it was just to noisey with train and semi's so we headed towards Mundulla to find a camp area called Jimmies Waterhole...but couldnt pin point it as GPS said we arrived but all we found was a very small triangle area along side the main road so we decided to stay the night at Mundullaoval...hoping not to meet up again with the locals we dealt with last time.
To their credit they had fixed the toilets nicely ...we set up staying the night.

Thursday Day2
We headed out early and headed south again...this time stopping at Western Flats.....very nice setup......all to neat...might be busy so we continued SW to Frances...to the Oval........was very dry and with no power.....we ended up back at Lake Ratzcastle...set up only to find the lake was now bone dry.

Friday Day3
Over night there were many campers...that left this morning...more came in that night

Saturday Day4
same as yesterday.......an old chap with a old caravan parked near us...spent lot of time chatting with him over the next 4 days

Sunday Day5...Monday Day6
Same

Tuesday Day7
in the afternoon a 4x4 towing a large van arrived ...only to find it was Hugo and wife in their brand new Island Star caravan..a great evening was had chatting about the Lake Eyre trip

Wednesday Day8
Hugo left early to beat the continuing heat and Graeme (the old chap) head off too........leaving us all by ourselves.
Late evening I felt it was going to rain....so we packed up the awning and annex canvas and put things away that might get wet...it was still very hot in bed but by midnight it did start raining...a quick close of windows

Thursday Day9
since we were mostly packed up we decided that we will head home, as more rain was forcasted...on the road by 7:30am and home by 1pm

this is the last trip for this year

First time had phone coverage...Wednesday we arrived at Plantation Campground..(Grampians)...we been there last year...you might recall the fancy shower buckets...
Well we left today.so fed up with European backpackers...arriving at site between 8pm and midnight...and parking in a 300mtr area 2feet from the corner of my caravan...last night we had 4 do it....it was 38c last night but they were cold.so they lite a camp fire and cooked their meals on those lunch box cookers....they complained how cold they were...might helped it the blokes wore more than stubby shorts...and girls in bathers...3am they finally shut up.and got in their wizbangers wicked vans

7am we left making as much noise as possible

Tonight we are at Goroke..CP..(north of Lake Ratzcastle)..on power...we dont have AC.....and its going to be 42 next 2 days

4 days into a months trip

Love the photos of the Diamond Firetails Dave. They are such beautiful birds. We bred dozens and dozens of them when we kept native finches. We had a big planted aviary 13 metres long and 4 metres wide. I only saw our first wild ones a couple of years ago at a dam north of Tamworth.

I really enjoyed having the finches but once we started travelling more often it was difficult to get someone to look after them so we decided to sell them.

Saw Goldfinches in the wild when we were down in Vic. We don't get them up here.

Some very miserable grey nomads out there. They are the ones the complain the loudest when such low cost/by donations close or starting charging more substantial fees that are collected efficiently.
I also hear their mantra that they spend in the towns.. only when they have to.
Had my say. Sorry.

All this bleating about what they spend drives me nuts, that is for sure.

We all have to spend but for me I only spend if I have to, regardless of where I am.

I usually fill the car with fuel when it gets to a certain level regardless of where I am and the same with food, we stock up when stocks get low whether it be Woollies or Coles in a big town or an IGA in a small town.

Generally I will buy meat at small town butchers because often their meat is often good quality.  A lot of small town butchers also make and smoke their own bacons and small goods.

I'm very cross.....there are fire drums here about 4....there was a lot of noise earlier down our side of this lake...a couple in a motorhome were braking branches off young trees and throwing them on a fire....all I could see was big area of smoke no fire and now less trees

Title: Re: Our trip West Victoria

Some people have no idea or they just don't care. When travelling we rely on free or low cost camping so it really annoys us when people do stupid things that jeopardise these places continuing to be provided for travellers.

There is something quite nice about Ratzcastle.  I must go back again one day.

After our three months in Victoria this year with only about 4 days without rain or snow would be nice to see it all again in sunshine  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Mind you a large proportion of it was in caravan parks so not that bad  :D

I just love the place names, Dave. Patchewollock and Lake Ratzcastle - absolute gold.† ;D

We have often thought about coming down and touring around Vic, but the place is full of bloody Victorians - except for the mobs that come up and pester us Queenslanders each year.† ;)

Maybe the best time is the cooler months to see that part of the country when most tourists avoid the place being so close to the South Pole.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

I love the snow Dave.  In fact on the next trip we are heading into the Snowy Mountains between Cooma and Talbingo although that is in NSW.

We are heading south sometime in June this year.  Bendigo in July for the Sheep and Wool Festival then heading west for a while before going north through Mildura to Silverton for the COG.

I wouldn't mind popping into Lake Batyo Catyo again for a look but reading the latest comments on WikiCamps they have let it become all overgrown now and still no water in the lake.

Well yesterday we headed to Lake Ratzcastle after thinking we were mad as the sky was stormy and strong winds...head winds all way over..normally takes us around 4.5 hours...yesterday we left home 9am  getting here 4pm...long day traveling.
The lake and swamp are full...this time we are camping about where we were when we were at COCIA COG
Today the weather was great....got a bit of sunburnt too

On another note the battery running my waeco fridge in car was flat when we arrived..so was the one in the caravan...after checking the car...I found the battery isolator had blown a fuse (25amp) resulting no power getting to rear of car...the waeco drew of the extra battery in the back of the car...and the van fridge being set on 12volt...flattened the van battery as no power went to it to...both batteries were charged by solar today..car one got to 13.2...van was 12.7

Will see what happens tomorrow  :-/

Similar thing happened to me couple of years ago in the Cruiser.  I have an ignition activated relay on the cabling to run the fridge while we are underway.  The whole thing blew up and burnt the relay out.  Found out that the 'auto electrician' who I will never go to again hadn't even fitted a fuse.

I recall being outside an auto parts store in Dubbo in the street with tools and extra wiring all over the place replacing it.

I hate it when electrics go wrong.

Good old Ratzcastle keeps drawing you back doesn't it Dave.  I wonder if the fish stocks are getting replenished after the drought.

Dave, have just seen a post on Caravanners Forum where someone has camped at Lake Batyo Catyo.  No water in the lake again however it seems you can camp there with no facilities.

Found on another Facebook Page where they left the old ski club building there, also the jetty and boat ramp but everything else has gone.

Might be worth a visit if you get over that way.

Cheers

Got this today from council so camping allowed again

Derek,

Thank you for your email of 17 May 2018 in relation to camping at Lake Batyo Catyo.

I can advise that bush camping is allowed at the lake reserve. There are no toilet facilities, powered sites or rubbish arrangements so we request campers to be self sufficient and take care of the site when visiting.

May 2018
Friday 4th Day1
After nearly 3 weeks without a car....we got it back Wednesday...only to find Thursday there was a bang noise in back we had to unload it Friday morning (all ready packed to go away) and take it back to Adelaide, it had a rebuilt gearbox, and they forgot to put a exhaust bracket back on...all fixed we headed home reloaded and hitched up ..looked at clock 12pm..headed over to Victoria to Lake Ratzcastle arriving 5:30pm SA time......worst part of trip was guzzling fuel...had to top up at Coonalpyn before stopping at Tintinara to fuel up

Saturday Day2
Started day off by finishing setting up the caravan from last night late arrival

Sunday Day3
Rain and more rain......had to did a trench around the awning walls..flooding

Monday Day4
Rosie washed few clothing.....hung it on the line then moved it all over the place chasing what sun there was.........that late afternoon we had neighbours from WA directly accross the track from us

Tuesday Day5
They left early ...all our meals were made on the webber........Rosie starting to get used to it now....we packed up everything not needed that night ready for an early start tomorrow....caught up with Steve today....cant believe its been 12 months since we been here......lot additions like many new picnic tables...plus its donation to stay here now

Wednesday Day6 Towitta Trip
I personally hate being woken by sound of roudy diesel heaters...so up and packed and were leaving by 7:30am...Got fuel at Tintinara again, return trip..306klms using 82ltrs fuel...GRRRRR!!!.....even with fill tank it just got us to Towitta..we arrived early set up same as Lake Ratz...behind the shed....followed by Rob and Lindsay and his wife Jeannie.......that night we sat by Poddies plough disc fire pit..but was windy and cold

Thursday Day7
More arrived today

Friday Day8
Campoven cooking commenced today......though with heatbeads instead and under the verandah........Rick & Cindy arrived late today......My phone being playing up

Saturday Day9
More the same

Sunday Day10
Again same

Monday Day11
All left bar Rick & Cindy and us......wind had stopped so we had a campfire going

Tuesday Day12 Headed off to Walker Flat
Had a look at Swan Reach but it was packed........so headed to Walker Flat....Hettner Landing...found a non-River view and set up ...left the River view for Rick & Cindy

Wednesday Day13
Rick took us both sight seeing to places they have camped before plus couple other places of interest (Shell Hill and Black Hill and Black Hill Rock)

Thursday Day14
Rick & Cindy packed up and headed home.....we stayed on......but weather was crappy......no rain yet

Friday Day15 Home bound
We packed up early......tried local shop to get fuel...but was none.....just got to Murray Bridge not much fuel left...(drove in the Exit didnt I)
Got home in time for late lunch

PS... took car back to Mitz......had work done and seems to be running better......will see next time we tow the van
PPS......I bought a new phone.....hope its blue tick......

HI Dave
Thanks for the photos and the information
I have not tried my stove yet. But on seeing what happened to your stove, Years ago in the 80's we had a
pot belly stove and we used, pot belly paint on it, so I am thinking if my stove goes the same way as your stove did I will paint it to prevent rust.
No harm trying.
enjoy your holiday.

It looks nice and quiet to spend a few days.

We had a COG there a few years ago. A bit more water back then.

Well for those that went to that COG you might remember the big hollow tree in the middle of the area we all camped around...well since then it was bollard off...well 8am this morning a huge branch broke off and landed where we all sat by the fire

Plenty of firewood now

Good evening.
That timber looks pretty good. It is a shame you cannot collect the rest so you can use later.  I just got back from the work shop I go to my  friend Allan  gave me a lot of black butt timber which I am going to cut up for firewood for nest winters caravan trip

Hi Dave
Well done on getting 3 bags full on fire wood.
Will be good to burn in your  little stove. My little stove got a work out recently when caravaning. Used 3  bags of timber off cuts from my wood working. cooking  some meals including breakfast every morning   boiling the billy during the evening using the water for a cuppa and the washing up.  I Had a great time. Keep enjoying your holiday
Take Care    Kev.

Would love to do that part of the country.
Need to get more time away on the road.
2 to 3 months at a time.
I'm not into short sharp trips.
Hetty has said 2021 will be when we go away for the big one.
2020 has 2 overseas holidays booked and plans for 2 shortish caravan trips(4 to 6 weeks each).
My impatience is driving her nuts.

Yep, agree there.  White tail tip, I think, says Wood Swallow.  They are quite common down that way.

We donít have a white tailed cockatoo in Australia Dave.  Yellow Tail is the one from that area and it certainly looks like one.

Hi Dave
I agree with Bear. A fellow from the village  here just put up on F/B
that he has been in Bendigo, Castlemaine, and now Ballarat
has been wanting to get a few supplies to keep them going
and has found shops cleaned out.
Take care Dave

Well the sh#$s hit the pan here..the Shires have all gone nuts and have closed lot of towns campsites and caravan parks..also Parks Vic are doing same..and heard tonight they are thinking of closing State boarders to stop the virus...not helping us as we were thinking of heading north from here but may not get there....

So might be home earlier than I should
