Title: new member - from Brisbane
Post by campingnut on Jun 26th, 2018 at 12:49pm
Hi guys - I like to go camping lots in my motorhome and I love to cook normal nutritious meals while away. I also like to grow many of my own ingredients in the garden. While I recently got badly burnt from a guy using hydro carbons on a fire -that has not deterred me from using fire properly as I have always tried to do. I look forward to the many cooking tips that you guys might have. I have always enjoyed Dereks cooking photos and recipes when I have seen them.

Welcome,
I am fairly new to the forum.
I too enjoy camping but in my caravan.
Have a great day

Welcome to our little forum, Dale.  You will have to try and get to one of our camp oven gatherings sometime.

Thanks guys - would love to see what you guys do sometime Derek. I used to camp in tents but the motorhome is more comfy for the wife. I think my camp oven is 10 inch -thats measuring the diameter of the top rim -Is that where you measure it? I need that figure for the heat bead calcualtor! My lid is quite curved so could I use a cake tin edge (cheese cake detachable side thingy) to keep the top heat beads from falling off?

Yes Dale. Camp ovens are measured in inches across the diameter.

One way I have seen of stopping the coals falling off on a round top oven is by winding a length of chain around the lid.

I'm assuming that diameter is at the top (lid level) as mine is 1.5 inches smaller at the bottom.  Chain is a good idea. Thanks

g,day and welcome .but i dont know how you folks can call a house on wheels camping . but i dont want to get into a debate over it . just thinking about the chain on the lid idea sounds pretty good , then i thought why not just roll a ring/hoop  of flat steel say inch by 1/8 or somewhere around that size to suit the oven lid in question . easy done on a ring roller (which i have ) or bent around a bit of anything to form the ring then weld the ends together .

I have seen people successfully roll a ring like that Johno as well.  The chain though is usually much easier to get your hands on.

Either way, as long as it works.

A home on wheels is not camping! Whoa... I've done the sleeping on the ground with a "hip hole", a swag, tents and so on and think at this stage of life a motorhome and cooking in a CO outside is camping.
Sounds like campingnut has a Dutch Oven if the heat beads are falling off, a chain or ring would both work.

Rob.

Yep, I think a lot of us as we have, like a good wine, “matured” and progressed to a home on wheels.

Wouldn’t have it any other way now but then Maggie doesn’t call it camping, it is now glamping.  :D

Does this mean Sharron and I are "Glamping All Over The Country Side" for our 10 week Caravan Holiday?
