Title: Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney Pie
Post by Derek on Jun 8th, 2019 at 10:42am
I love steak and kidney and it features often on the menu.

Was walking through ALDI and they had a high pile of Fray Bentos tinned steak and kidney pies as part of last weeks special buys so thought I would give one a try.

Maggie turned her nose up initially and when I opened the tin (second photo) I too was a little sceptical.

However after 30 minutes in a hot oven it actually looked quite nice so I served it up with mash and sprouts for quite an easy dinner.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall in my childhood Fray Bentos steak and kidney puddings but not the taste.

Going down to Aldi in the morning to see if my local has them.  Looks good after cooking.

We don't have a ALDI up here but I found them on Woolworths on line for $7.50 normal price. Is it tinned or is it a refrigerated item?

Got me stuffed why you blokes are so hyped up over a pie in a tin.
You are all quite capable of cooking a pie you put together yourself that would look and taste a lot better than this canned stuff. :)

I would say convenience, but if you see me using a can opener one handed you would forget the convenience factor.
The only can I can manage easily is one with xxxx on it. :)

Yep, convenience.

Would take me two and a half hours to slow cook a good steak and kidney and then another fifty minutes for the pie.

Lid off the tin and thirty five minutes to cook it  :D

I think they should pay me for all the spruiking I do about them but Woolworths have these now.

Usually on the shelf below all the spam.  Another favourite of mine that I can’t get Maggie to eat  ;D

Good grief.

I had never really noticed this abomination before God.

Since this thread I have now seen it in every supermarket I have recently visited between Sydney - Nyngan - Cobar - Broken Hill - Barossa Valley and back.

What has been seen cannot be unseen!

;D :D :o

I think we are all aware of the price increases in groceries in recent times.

These are getting priced out of reach at $10.50 a tin at Woolies now.

Now that I have a ready supply of ox kidney at our IGA at home I may not even get any at all.

However when the tins of Smoked Kippers are on sale I usually buy 20 tins.  Haven’t yet seen them this year.   ;D ;D

No problems here good stewing steak and plenty of kidneys. Have 6 x 750 mil containers in the freezer.

One thing we found in SA is the lack of bakeries who sell SK pies so now we make our own. Cheers Robert.

Robert, what I have found a lot is when you can get a steak and kidney pie, the kidney hasn’t been cooked with the rest of the meat inside and all you get is a sprinkling of cooked kidney on top of the pie meat.
