Title: Hickory Blocks
Post by Derek on Mar 22nd, 2026 at 12:07pm
Had to slip down to Bunnings before to get some more Heatbeads.  I am still using the blue bag that has coconut charcoal.

When I was there I spied some bags of Hickory chunks.  I use Hickory for a lot of smoking and usually can only get chips which means feeding them in every 10 to 15 minutes.

These are actually milled chunks all the same size.  Have one in the Weber Kettle now.  Interesting to see how long it smokes for.

$18.50 for 2 kg bag.

Be interested as well Derek, have you tried olive wood.

I have used a bunch of different fruit woods, especially now we have a small orchard. (I always sort through the prunings, much to my wife's disdain).

Olive wood is very strong and burns very hot - it is a particularly dense wood.  I am not a fan of the flavour it imparts.

Of "our" flavour woods, I like apple followed by peach/nectarine.

I put one chunk of the Hickory on the heatbeads and after an hour when my cooking was done there was most likely still a third left.

I do like a strong smoke and have predominantly using hickory for years.  Only recently tried the lighter side of apple and quite like it on bacon.

Have never used olive.
