Have found that a couple of cheap solar powered garden lights (about $ 10-00) from the wharehouse type stores are great set up around the camp site provide a nice soft light through the night without being to intrusive. One is also great if set up on the creek bank at your launch point if fishing at night as a home beacon

Hey Sooty

Love the idea of the solar lights.  Gonna look into that.  You can pick up a set of 4 for less than $40.

Light while camping at night is always a problem.  What a fantastic idea to use solar lights.
Glow sticks inside the tent also help especially when camping with kids.  They are cheap and stop you from falling over everyone when getting up in the middle of the night.

That's a great idea Sooty!  Thanks!  Simple, cheap and effective.  Can't beat that!  Tripping over something in the dark and getting hurt when you're way out in the wild is not a good situation to be in.  Your tip provides for some cheap insurance.  Very good tip!  Thanks again.

Have to agree with the other responses.  Fantastic idea, especially when kids are invloved.

I do 2 different things at the moment.

1.   beach camping  =  I use and old car battery and have a few 12v Fluro's with Aligator clips to light about the BBQ, over the eating table and next to the " ensuite "   Roll Eyes

( I used to do the gas powered thing, but in the end, gas, mantles, many gas bottles etc, amde for too much weight and items. )

2.    Camping in a Caravan Park or powered camp site.  I take along those $10 Crazy Clarks Fairy Lights.  They are not too bright and make the place look homely.  I have a set strung inside the tarp that are white and coloured ones around the outside.

Hi       I take a rechargable 12v jump starter thingo , it has two cig lighter outlets . We have found a number of uses for it  . lighting and for the 12v shower . It  run the lights and shower  up to  30 hours  , it also charges from the car as your driving  if need be . I got it because I used to run these from the car  and I was worried that the car wouldn't start the next morning .

The Glow sticks work really well and last around 6 hours i put them on the Tarp rope because i have had a few tripping sessions in the past and the wife tends to get a little upset when she gets caught up in the ropes as well  Grin Grin Grin

CB, We're on the Central Coast.

Some of the spots we went to this year have included Hill End, Port Stephens, Caves to Caves (Jenolan to Wombeyan) twice, Batemans Bay twice, Wattagans and Lake Lyell.

I prefer the bush...my wife (April) prefers the Sheraton  Grin Grin Grin , luckily she tolerates camping a lot better since owning the Coromal and a Coleman hot water system.

We have 5 kids although 3 no longer think its "cool" to go camping with Mum and Dad, the two that do, are 2 and 3 years old.

Hey Mark CB

What happened to "GET IN THE CAR YOU ARE GOING" used to work with the kids bit harder to convince the missus though weaker sex my butt. Have been through the same issues and they change again when they get older and then its their turn to yell "GET IN THE CAR YOU OLD BUGGER YOU ARE GOING IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT" and thats the missus

Cheers Furphy

Furphy,

Mate your right...I've adopted "get in the car your going" practice with the 2 and 4 year old but with the others....

The oldest one is married and owns his own home, our daughter lives with a girlfriend and the 15 year old....still at home, has a girlfriend.

We invited them to go camping with us at Dubbo for Easter and what a drama....somewhere along the line they thought that we were supplying everything but there clothing  Grin Grin Grin Grin.

I am often told to pack the 4x4 while they sit in the front bitin at the bit to get away from the big smoke.
I have a disabled son of 20 ( James) and he loves the out door adventures and the wife ( Sandra)are always looking for a long weekend and a bit of warm weather to ( Make it Happen)

Now that the warmer weather is with us its time to take the cover off the camper and hit the road. We're off to Millmerran in a couple of weeks time and I'm fussing around like an old sheila getting things ready.
Don't have to worry about teenage daughters and all the gear they deem totally necessary or sons and surfboards etc etc we're empty nesters now and ain't that great.
Missus still working or else I'd just keep heading north and when I could'nt go any further I'd turn left.  I've given up worrying about the price of diesel, just go.
Poddy Dodger.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

And Kingwilly, I hope you and your family are getting away as often as possible.
Although Chris and I live in a country town with clear skies at night nothing, nothing ever, compares to being in the outback somewhere.
Then equal to that has to be consideration for those who do live and make their bread and butter there.
All a matter of respect, something sometimes lacking these days.

cheers mikel

I have been useing solar lights camping for while also, the kids take one in the tent every night with them, they don't get hot like gas, & give them just enough light to get organised for bed, & if they wake up through the night they are not in pitch darkness.
Try & get the ones with 2 double A batteries as they last till about 5 am, the single battery jobs only last till about 1.
I'v also used them to recharge our digi camera batteries.
