I am wondering about other camping equipment  even things such as a dunny. Every camp needs a dunny Thease things come in all sorts and sizes  then there are the home made type such as mine which is shadecloth  90%   with 4  tent poles frame.  works well and easy to pack up .

garden worm; i also have made my own dunny due to the prices of chemi toilets  i have an old shower tent with no floor which the toilet sits in'; the toilet is an old toilet seat on a frame that sits over a hole i find if you take sawdust with you there is hardly any smell.  Wink you can get sawdust from most sawmills if not you can buy it at some produce stores. i also have my own worm farm which i use as much as i can. if anyone has any more ideas please let us know. thanks carl

Hi Camperbear

There are not a lot of Sawmills around any more which makes it harder to find sawdust

Whether you use a hole or a lined container (as we do) I have found the best stuff to use as a deodorant and keep flies completely away is builders lime (hydrated)
I have it in an old buiscuit tin (Arnotts, hinged lid) and for the benefit of camp visitors painted "a scoop of lime each time" on the lid. (the scoop being half a beer can)

CB. If you drop into a hardware shop you can look at a bag to see what is written on the back. But basically it is a very safe product, good in the garden to reduce acidity (adds calcium) used in water for clarification and softening and I think would be no problem with kids etc. and certainly environmently friendly.
Not to be confused with "slaked lime" which is the stuff used to "dissolve" bodies and such like dastardly deeds! Angry
The last bag I bought (25kg.) was about $7 but that was 3yrs. ago and I still have 1/4 bag left.

I picked up a 20kg bag at xmas for $9, from a produce store, does it break down waste in pit dunnies.
Me & my brother got sick of squating on our trialbike trips, especialy after a big night on the turps.
So we cut out a dunny seat shaped hole in the top of a milk crate, & cable tied an old seat to it, we had a small shovel with a tee on top, we would dig a whole ablot a foot deep, then stick the shovel into the ground, the tee hande held the dunny roll, & you would just shrow a shovel of dirt into the whole after use, then fill it in completely when you leave.
The crate was just tied onto the trailer with the bike, lots of people driving past had a big smile on there face

Sorry to shoot you down here but some of your info is wrong.
Builders Lime and Slaked Lime are one and the same thing. This stuff is extremely fine and "soft". It is also extremely fluffy and will fill the air with a "mist" that makes breathing difficult. It's not for people with asthsma.
The stuff used for destroying bodies is called "Quick-Lime". This stuff reacts with water and generates huge amounts of heat. Quick Lime is made from limestone that is dug/cut/excavated from a quarry. It is taken as raw chunks of rock to a kiln (furnace) where it is heated and "burnt". At the temperature it is heated to, it undergoes a chemical change and forms Quick Lime. This is very dangerous stuff and will create awfull burns on flesh or damp skin.
The quick-lime is cooled and dropped into water that "slakes" it to produce builders lime or slaked lime. This is the stuff that is mixed with sand/loam and cement to make brickies motar. The slaked lime makes the motar "fluffy" and able to be worked. Slaked lime is also spread over the ground that has been flooded and reeks of decaying vegetation. You may have seen this on peoples yards after the water finaly receeds.
