Well Camper Bear I reckon I have most of the free camping books ever printed and most of them are only good to light the fire with. However the latest "Camps Australia Wide 3" might'nt be perfect but it is worth the $45 which you'll save the first couple of days by avoiding caravan parks.
I find you get to know where to look for free camp sites, tracks near creeks, gravel pits, boat ramps etc.
When we first started travelling my wife stipulated she'd only bush camp every other night as she wanted a hot shower etc in a caravan park, many years later we only use caravan parks when we don't have any choice. The canvas shower bucket off the back of the van, nice fire with the camp oven simmering a healthy cup of Chateau de Plonk, what more do you want ? Poddy Dodger.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

G'day Little_Kopit.
Spose its only us in the eastern states talk about "heading west"? If you happen to already be on the west coast there is only east!
As one who lives about 200km. inland (on top of the great divide) from the east coast we can travel west well over 1500km. and still not be half way across. This is what is referred to as the "outback", an essentially remote environment but with some very hospitable inhabitants. (but dont leave the gates open if they are closed!)
The camping in these areas is essentially "free", great rivers/water holes to fish, catch yabbies, shoot a duck for the camp oven etc. Its a matter of making the right approach to the land holder and establishing your bona fides.
And for anyone intent on making an approach for permission on an outback property always have a bundle of the most recent newspapers as a gift. They are always appreciated.

Well, I have to keep this talk going.  It's very interesting,  Mike, now how did you guess that I live on the west coast of this island off the east coast of Canada.  Or that here there is a stretch of coast called 'the Southern Shore', which is really a part of the east coast of the island.  It's just south of the city of St. John's, see.

Rabbit for the pot - the Dutch Oven, eh!  You said shoot.  How about snare?  BTW how big are the rabbits?  As one person, do I put the left overs in the fridge/cooler or share with the pooch, who will be my companion?   Hmm, would I be creating bad habits with that last idea?

I know about gates too.  I grew up on a farm.  Livestock and all.  Cattle and sheep and pigs. I wonder how I would do around them now.

As for this booklet, Poddy Dodger, did you say free?  Now, I wonder what it would cost to have it shipped 1/2 way around the super paddock?

Hi Carl

If you look at the slide in menu on the left (run your mouse over it) there is a link called "Camp Oven Cooking".  Click on it and in the Index on the page that opens click on "Preparing Your Camp Oven".  It tells you in there how to season (cure) your camp oven.

Camper Bear, When I tent camped I used to use a very thin compact foam mattress.  I probably still have it around.  Looking at my favourite camping supply place here:  www.mec.ca, I found something called thermarest by going to the sleeping bags section.  http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=253437430270...  Price range $30-40 CAD.

Then I went to www.google.com.au and searched 'thermarest' and clicked on pages from Australia.  & I got http://www.paddypallin.com.au/page.asp?PartID=210&Step=3&CategoryID=&DepartmentI...  Some difference in price all right.  But that's the idea.  I think I'd be tempted to look around.
