A couple of weeks ago I acquired two Metters camp ovens, a 12" and a 14", that had been painted in yellow gloss enamel and presumably spent the last few years on someone's patio.
After getting them home I hit them with paint stripper and a scraper to only find another coat of black paint under the yellow,  now this paint was a lot more stubborn, I think NASA would like to know the formula of the black paint and use it on their space shuttle, it would be more durable than their ceramic tiles.
At this stage I lost count of how many times I had put paint stripper on and they both still looked pretty ordinary so I took them to an abrasive metal cleaning firm who wanted $100.00 to "blast" them  and told me, "All care but no responsibility". The final bit decided me to persevere with the cleaning myself.
I got a fire going in the back yard and carefully "cooked" them, this worked with almost no paint left either inside or out. To remove what was left and smooth up the insides I put a sanding disc on my drill and gave them a buff, they are not perfect but after I season them they will be very usable.
The moral of the story is no matter how bad they look as long as they are'nt cracked they can be salvaged.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Ok, PD's digital image assistant has received the after pictures.

...

That's one of the ones that was painted.  Then given lots of TLC by PD.

...

& the above is both one of the painted Metters plus another which PD managed to buy for a very nice price at a market.

I'm sure he has more to tell us.
