After thinking about it for a while I have now joined The International Dutch Oven Society that is based in Utah, America.  It costs $15 USD a year.

Neat pin they have sent me.  It's in the shape of a little camp oven

Click on the pic below to check them out.

Does "The Australian Chapter of The International Dutch Oven Society" appeal to you.  If so, are you interested in forming such a Chapter.

What is required is three financial members of the International Dutch Oven Society.  This currently costs $15.00 USD a year (thats roughly $20.00 AUD, and compliance with the following:

Quote:
IDOS Chapters – How to Start
Starting a Chapter is easy. All you need is three people and to complete the following steps,
1. Print a copy of the Sample Chapter Bylaws from the Chapter Page on the IDOS Website.
2. Organize a meeting to elect the officers of the Chapter. Remember, this only requires three
people to fill the minimum set of officers (Chapter Director, Assistant Director, and Secretary.
You can add a Treasurer if needed).
3. Meet and fill in the Bylaws by
a. Selecting a Chapter name. When coming up with a name it will need to fit into the
blank in the bylaws by ending in Chapter. An Example would be the “Yellowstone
Chapter of the International Dutch Oven Society”. Yellowstone would be what you fill
in on the line in the bylaws.
b. Select the geographical region that will be covered by the Chapter. We suggest using
predefined geographical boundaries used by your local agencies (i.e. counties,
provinces, etc.). If there are no such boundaries in the country in which you reside, do
the best you can to make it easy to tell whether someone would be in your Chapter or
the next one over.
c. Last, elect a Director, an Assistant Director, and a Secretary/Treasurer. The Secretary
and Treasurer can be different individuals if you have enough people. These
individuals, as with all members of your chapter, need to be members in good standing
with IDOS. Have them sign and fill out the last page of the Bylaws, and mail them to
the IDOS President or your Regional Representative in your area.
4. After the IDOS board has received the Bylaws, they will verify that the name conforms to
standards, and the signatures of the officers are completed and that each officer is a member of
IDOS. Then we will add your information to the IDOS Web site and order your Chapter
Banner. (IDOS provides a banner to all chapters with their name on it.) You will be notified
of the board’s ratification and then you will be an official chapter with rights to use the IDOS
name within the guidelines of the bylaws.
If you have any questions, please contact the IDOS President or the Regional Representative in
your area.

Would be interested in your thoughts.

Probobably nothing Rob, just knowing that you are an inaugural member of something. Oh yes, and the pin.  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Actually, when I first started playing on the net I set up on camping.com with a view to organising an Australian Camp Oven Cooking Group/Organisation/Society ( still dont know what it should be called).  It didnt go far so I decided to try and raise interest by creating my own website and by going around doing cooking demonstrations and promoting it.  I also set up this chat board although it was in a different form back then.

Was living in south east Queensland at the time and things were starting to come together however a man has to earn a living and I ended up in Wagga Wagga just before I was due to give a 4 day demonstration alongside Thommo at the innaugural National Camp Oven Festival at Casino.  That was where I was going to further attempt to raise the issue of a National Organisation.

Casino comes up again in 2007 and I still haven't lost that real momentum.  For me, camp oven cooking was a part of life in early Australia and it shouldnt be lost.  A National Organisation that sponsors and ensures it continues is a must for our children and grandchildren.

It would be great if "WE" could sponsor the Australian National Festivals and not someone who makes so called Australian camp ovens in China.

When that happens I wouldnt have a problem if it were affilliatted with the International Dutch Oven Society.

Cheers

I share your sentiments Derek, I would like to see a club of some sort in Oz with the aims of reviving or maintaining the interest in cast iron pots, C.I. cooking, recipes and rescuing them from becoming garden plant pots as does IDOS.
If you get enough starters for a DOG I'm interested. pd

I also agree with you Derek, and perhaps the nucleus of such an organisation is right here with this forum. Having looked at IDOS, I dont think that simply being a "down under" affiliate (chapter)would have any great benefit for us.
We have our own strong history of camp oven cooking from the earliest time of settlement. My family came from England in 1949 to live in the Gippsland bush and although we had a rural background, camp oven cooking was not part of it. My mother quickly became familiar with their use though and they were used consistantly through to the mid 70's when their upright bottled gas stove was purchased. Much of my collection comes from that inheritance.
Its pretty fair to say I grew up with camp ovens, Tilley lamps and cross cut saws. Am I just being whimsical by saying its not an International but very much an Australian heritage, therefore "Australian Camp Oven Society" or such to be more appropriate?
