Why thank you KV & CB for welcoming me aboard.  Smiley Smiley

To show my appreciation I am obliged to share with you yet another true story.

My ex-son-in-law is in the Army and he went on an operation as far north as is allowed for some winter exercises. In fact had he trudged a few more kilometers, he'd have been going down on the other side of the planet. Among other things, he brought home a piece of Musk Ox, a roast of maybe three kilos.

To cook Musk Ox, there are not too many recipes out there, so I used what I figured would be the best of the bunch. Now I'm going to share this with you and am sure that you will not share my culinary secret with others (thank you) .

First you get three egg-sized stones and place them in the bottom of the pot so as the meat will rest upon them. Fill up the pot with water until the meat is covered and then a bit more. Add salt, about a double three-pinch measure of salt will do. Bring it to a boil and let it go for several hours. This is where the stones come into play. When you are able to pierce the stones with a fork, the meat is done!

That piece of meat was as tender as a trailer hitch. Even the dog wouldn't touch it and finally I had a bright idea, I screwed an eyebolt into it and the following summer used it for an anchor and also a chum pot at the same time. As for an anchor it worked out fine, but everytime I used it, I never caught any fish.

So, this is my true story and I'm sticking to it and as I mentioned, Rémi ismy EX son-in-law..........

Hey cjv
Went fishing a few years back during the night and was using a kerosine pressure light called a tilley light over here the light actually uses a cloth mantel that once is prepared provides a very bright light that is fed by a hand pumped pressure tank through jets. Anyway as I was saying I was fishing off the banks of one of our western rivers and doing alright and stood up to pull in a fish that I had caught on a hand line when I stood on a stick that I had'nt noticed in the grass unfortunatly the stick was actually lying under the light and before I could react the light was rolling down the bank and ended up in the river and I lost it. So I went back to the camp and grabbed a torch and went back to fishing extremly annoyed as you would imagine it was a good light and I got some stick about losing it.
Anyway during the course of the night I kept catching fish and about 2 hours later I caught a 25lb Murray Cod one of our premium freshwater fish over here beautiful eating so beibng quite proud of my catch I took it up to the camp and proceeded to clean and gut it and believe it or not inside the fish I found my lost Tilley light and blow me away it was still going.

Now cjv if you remove the eyebolt from that piece of meat I will actually blow that light out Grin Grin Grin Grin
Cheers Furphy

Hey Furph,
A similar thing happened to me in the Culgoa anly it was a 18 lb Yellowbelly and I was using a Carbide light. Didn't have those modern  pressure lights back then.
Buggered if I know how it kept alight
OH the smell of Carbide brings back so many memories. Sheares quarters when I was a Rouseabout, the only light was a Carbide light that we all read by them and the Cook cooked  breakfast and Brownie cake for the team by the dull light they provided.
CARBIDE  BOMBS now how did we make them??

Am sure a lot of members will remember the stinkin CARBIDE LIGHTS

Cheers Kev   Sad

Guys

That reminds me of a little town called Yetman in NSW where we went fishin for these wonderful Murray Cod and the locals told me they grew the fish big down that way. Anyways tha locals told me to go to the Butchers and grab a leg of lamb to use as bait as it was gettin late and i only just caught the butcher shop before it closed so i grabbed me leg of lamb and went to the local for quite a while and after staggering out of the local as it was closing time i headed down to the what is know as the Cod hole and baited up my hook.
And with all my effort as you probably know im only a little bloke i proceeded to hurl the line out and sat in silence for about 3 hours when all of a sudden all hell broke loose and my line was goin like crazy and guys how big do ya think he was

Enter down

Yep it supprised me to a bluddy mangy old red fox how was i to know the river was only 10 ft wide

Cheers
