Last weekend I camped with a group of mates who all had braziers made from made from old 9kg gas bottles, its not a new idea but after seeing them in operation I'm converted and will make one before my next trip, I've never bothered before because they take up valuable space and I did'nt see a real need.
To get the most out of them I was told after cutting the top off and welding it to the bottom as a stand you drill a dozen or so 12mm holes on the under side, too many holes around the sides and it burns too quickly,  a hinged door on the side if you want to cook toast. .  A couple of removable rods on the top to sit your frying pan on and you're in business !
One bloke has a sieve and he recovers charcoal and small pieces of wood from old campfires, he has welded a piece of 12mm pipe to the underneath of the brazier and he connects this to a 12volt blower, a fire starter a few sticks and when it gets going add the charcoal and in less than five minutes you have enough live coals for your camp oven. I have'nt tried it but he swears it works.

These are all good ideas PD and most innovative. My thought is always to get the most cooking from the least amount of fuel (wood or briquettes) with portability of the unit. My latest is the one I that can do the most variations on the theme (see bush rotisserie, another thread some time ago).
But as ever, its what you need at the time that counts. I (we) just enjoy the lingering aroma of a nice piece of beef, pork or even a humble chook being slowly rotated on a spit with an spicy herb marinade adding to the final flavour. We often cook at home like this whenever we are not in the bush.
And some times when not even cooking just sit by the backyard fire place and wait whilst the billy boils.
cheers mikel

PD & Mikel
I have one of the converted gas bottles and find it teriffic for quick cooking although I have never used it with the camp oven but cant see why it would'nt work I also have a 200lt drum cut off at the lower rung and with legs welded on the bottom to use as a camp oven pit using heat beads and also have a pressed steel lid to place over the top both fot heat retention and as a base to sit my camp oven mate when not using heat beads   Smiley best of both worlds in one unit will also doubles as a heater for winter in the new BBQ area when its completed in the next few weeks and I will post some pics when all is done. Also have an old 18gal XXXX beer keg sliced sideways and converted into a large spit "well 3 chooksat a time anyway" all will be revealed in due course with the photos. Looks like a good little setup you have there Mikel looks very cosy and that red sets the scene
Catch ya

Furphy, you have got the right idea.  I sure would like to see some pics right beside what you describe.

PD, where was your camera last weekend*?

Cool

* Yeah, I know, where are mine?  But you won't see pics of the fall project until it's done.
