I seem to remember that bark on Oz trees is naturally fire retardant - in old days a natural bushfire quickly burned grass and light scrub regularly then died,  leaving trees unharmed. These flash fires generated little heat.   But with mans intervention - suppressing fires to protect property and grazing  -  the scrub gets more sturdy so when it DOES burn it generates much more heat.  Which in turn penetrates the bark of mature trees which have explosive sap.  Well,  that's what I was told.  This phenomena of course is world wide - the build up of heavier inflammables because of fire suppression,  causing heat nature never intended.

But wot do I know . . . . . .  And that's small comfort for those who suffer so much from these conflagrations.  And lets not forget the wildlife !

In sadness and quiet reflection,

JohntheBaptist

And on a slightly different theme :  Tree rings.  A Perfessor here was lecturin' on his specialty - tree rings showing annual growth,  and reading seasonal changes within the rings, to determine rainfall in a given year etc.   Nuthin' new in all this.

(I only went to school to eat some other kids lunch so I have no qualifications,  other than an interest in the outdoors and all things in nature.  And cast iron . . . . lol).  But he was emphatic - 300 rings equals 300 years.  I couldn't help myself . . . . . lol.  At kweschin time I raised Oz trees,  which in draught (mostly) don't die but just shut down.  No growth (or rings).  Many can hibernate 7 years and a select few species up to 14 years !  Thus skewing the reading of the rings.  In theory,  a tree with this ability in frequent drought could show 100 rings but might be 500 years old.  The Prof was silent for a bit,  muttered it was all news to him and went on to a different question   -      lol

Blessed be Oz and all it's wonders !

Not the same John but along similar lines is the kangaroo which can stop the gestation period during times of drought or hard times then let it resume when things pick up, ain't nature marvellous.

Here we are farming sheep and cattle in a dry continent where stock losses are enormous during a prolonged drought when we should be farming 'roos which are good eating and almost drought and disease  resistant. Whadda I know ?

Chees Furph, I'm glad to see you've got the Christmas spirit, y'know, peace on earth and goodwill to all men. Yeah things started to get a bit serious there, a couple of red cordials after dinner and I've lightened up a bit, in fact I think I'll go and have another one or three.
I wishes yez all a happy Christmas and hope the fat bloke in red drops off whatever it is you've wanted to buy for yourself but put off. A little GPS navigator or some long Ugh boots, a semi-auto with scope, a half dozen slabs of imported y'know, mmmmm maybe some R M boots and an Akubra or just a nice colouring in book and some crayons ?
I think I'm getting some new wire strainers and a post hole shovel to do that long postponed fence, oh well......

Furphy  -  her name was Conchita.  And a cheater she was too. . . . . .

And not to be outdone by a Canadian,  I am looking at a Penfolds 2000,  Bin 128  Coonawarra Shiraz, as it quietly "breathes".  And it won't be "breathin'" for much longer.  I believe in your quaint Oz Culture this  relaxing pastime is known as "suckin' on a cordial"  ?

Well I might let meself go and have an old port or two for Christmas, promised my daughter I'd crack one of those bottles I've been keeping for a special occasion.

JtB what was ya doin' takin yer Akubra off ?? I never, repeat never take mine off, gets a bit awkward washin' the hair but I don't do that often and I don't have much hair anyway.

LK, a cheeky little Chardonnay eh, you wont' need to chill it too much and have one for me.

My new signature:  I started out with nothing and still have most of it left.
