G'day Honda, here's a quick and simple recipe for rabbit.
Firstly make sure you soak your rabbit in salt water overnight.Take it out dry it with paper towel and then cut into meium size piece. Pre heat your camp oven add some butter or oil and proced to brown the rabbit pieces.
then remove the rabbit when browned add 1 onion (chopped) and 2 carrots cut into pieces add more butter to saut'ee add 2 table spoons of flour and stir until you get colour (browned) and it thickens.
Add 1 cup of red wine and 1 cup chicken stock making sure rabbit and ingredients are just covered with liquid. Then add 250 grams of bacon pieces or stripsand fresh herbs (rosemary, garlic, sage any fresh herbs experiment) then cook slow until rabbit is tender. add salt and pepper to season and add potatoes as well if you like. thicken with cornflour if needed but it should thicken in its own juices. to reduce liquid in camp oven cook with the lid off for 20 minutes.
Hope this is ok let me know how it goes.
Astroboy.

Honda

You are right about the Furphy.  They have been made in China for about 6 years now.  Both Bedourie and Hillbilly are made in Australia.

I have both but have been using a Bedourie for over 25 years.  You will see it plenty of times throughout my website and I fully recommend them.  Their website is http://www.southern-metal-spinners.com.au/

Photo below shows a batch of pumpkin fruit muffins straight out of a Bedourie that you can see in the background.

I am on holidays in Queensland at the moment and will post a recipe or two for rabbit when I get home.

Cheers

Derek

Honda,
glad you like the recipe. In regards to buying a campoven, check out some of the camping stores over your way and you may still be able to pick up an aussie made furphy. I have seen the odd one still lying around covered in dust just waiting for someone to buy. I'll post some photos that will help you identify an aussie made one's. You can hit your local antique and junk shops you never know what you might find there as well. Personally I use Furphy's, Metter's, Bedourie's they're all great, earlier this year i picked up a great C.C Harding 13 inch campoven in a camping store on the Victorian border near Echuca and I'm pretty sure that foundry has been out of operation for over 5 years now. So It just goes to show you never Know what you might find when you start looking.
P.S love ya state mate had some memorable times fishing Dirk Hartog Island over there.
Good luck with the hunt.
Astro.

I think I have visited every camping shop, second hand shop and collectables shop between the Victorian Border and central Queensland.  While I have seen a few camp ovens, good cast iron is hard to come by these days.

I paid $204.00 for my old 15" Furphy.  Started bidding on a 10" Furphy on eBay not that long back but it ended up going for $290.00.

If you see any at anytime, and the price is reasonable then grab them because they will be worth big dollars in the future.

Honda, the lid of the Bedourie is like a round cake tim that fits down over the camp oven and the coals sit on top.  No way can the ash fall inside unless you tip it in when lifting it off.  The other good thing about the Bedourie is that the lid makes a great frying pan turned up the other way. I was recently talking to Bill at Southern Metal Spinners and he is developing a Bedourie with a lip on top to make it easier to keep the coals on it.  Will let you all know how that goes.

Yes I have a Hillbilly but have only ever used it with the gas heat burner.  Have seen them used with heat beads.  The lid is like a big pie plate so coals cannot fall off it.  See the photo.  One on the right is working on gas and the one on the left has heat beads on top.  By the way, have never seen a hillbilly with coals underneath.

I may be biased towards the Bedourie because it was the first camp oven I ever owned and I learned to cook in it.

Cheers

A nifty idea with Hillbilly is the vegetable ring that sits down inside the lid.  I haven't used mine yet however have seen some great roast vegies done in one, also some great deserts.

If you look close you will see a leg of lamb under those potatoes.
