The preasure was on over easter, we took a doz, friends, (& a couple of locals turned up) to our bush weekender, They all brought legs as they had herd of my new camp oven cooking. could I get it right, or would 14 people starve, no electricity as back-up like home. No pizza as the closest town is 80 kays away.

I have done about 1/6 doz roasts in the back yard, on heat beads with no problems.

So trying to look profesional, I chucked some kero on a bag of beads, & lite em up. My mate brought his Hill Billy spun metal oven, he hadent had any luck with it on gas.
We had 2 legs of lamb, a pork, & a piece of beef, I put 2 in each oven, 10 beads under each & about 15 on top. Saying with confidence, thats it, we grabbed some beers & went off to dig some gravel, & repair our track in, so my mates car could get out a bit easier, than he got in.

When we got back in an hr or so, I knew something was wrong. as i go by the sizzle to get the the tempreture right, there was near silence, the girls had the fire going by then so we put heaps of coals on top & around the ovens to get them going, all turned out ok, in the end, only an hr or so later than planned, plus damper for desert.

I cooked two legs of lamb in my Hillbilly on the weekend.  I completely fill the top with a single layer of heat beads and dont bother with any on the bottom.  Turn the meat half way through cooking.

Good as gold.
