Hi Derek,

I am new to Camp Oven Cooking and was looking at some advice, I have logged into Cabela's internet site and have been looking at purchasing a few items an wanting your advice and guidance

The items I am looking at purchasing are as follows.

1)
Lodge Tri-Leg Dutch Oven Item:IH-510162 size 10" 4 quart, we are only 2 and I believe this size camp oven will suit 2 to 6 people is this correct.    $34.99 US.
(I have read elsewhere these have been pre-seasoned is this correct. (I really don't want to smoke my house out, is there any way to season camp ovens outside.)

2)
Cabela's Cast-Iron Dutch Oven Carry Bags Item:IH-516422 size 10" to 12"  $12.99 US

3)
Lodge Dutch Oven Lid Stand Item:IH-513782  $9.99 US

4)
Deluxe Lid Lifter Item:IH-513829 14" $14.99 US

5)
Dutch Oven Table Item:IH-514234 $64.99 US. (I am thinking this item can be used also for a 3 burner stove, dumping our previous stive stand)

Total of $137.95 US plus 20% shipping $27.59 US $164.54 US Equates to $194.05 Aus

Would a large Milo or Coffee can with holes punched around the bottom do as a Chimney, just a thought.

Would I be better off purchasing the camp oven only first up to see how I go.

Cheers

Hi

You really are going all out first up with your purchases.  Do you really want to spend that much money I guess??

I have purchased from Cabelas before and they are great to deal with and the service is exceptional.

Everything that you are buying is spot on though.  Although you could purchase similar items, except the cooking table, at your local camping store here in Australia for much less.  On top of that if I recall the 20% freight is by surface mail that will take around 6 to 8 weeks to get here.  I have waited 10 weeks for some things from the states.  Last time I paid the extra for air freight and it was here within a week.

The lodge oven is a great one although it isn't pre-seasoned.  My preference would be for the 12" one as the old saying, "You can cook a small meal in a large camp oven but you can't cook a large meal in a small camp oven".  I have a 12" Lodge.  As for seasoning outside, well it is what we all did once over a good bed of coals.  Same principles just use the fire.

The carry bag, lid holder and lifter are all great.  I have two of those tables and they are fantastic and you are right, if not using the camp oven on it you can use it for the stove.  Actually if you check the front page of my website there is a photo of them.

With the chimney, I have a Weber brand one and you can get them at places like Barbecues Galore where they sell Weber Barbecues.  Not sure about a milo tin as the size would be limiting.  I also bought one from Cabelas that is far larger that the Weber.

As for what to start off with I am not going to suggest but I don't know anyone who has started camp oven cooking and given it away.  Sooooooooooooo ................ welcome to camp oven cooking.

Cheers
