Chimney, me son, chimney.

Stuff you can light and will burn awhile below and coals above.

Now, that's another way in the attached pic, courtesy of PD.  put the propane burner under it.

Cool

PD says I should edit what I put in anyway

But there is the question of  lighter fluid.  Besides the chimney and something like newspaper, grass, dry leaves, etc. there is lighter fluid.  In this part of the world there are many months when fires outside of specially constructed campground structures are absolutely totally taboo. & then there are times when even those are banned.  I know parts of Oz have times like that too.  That is when heat beads/charcoal briquettes and things like  off the ground devices are essential.

But to give more of PD's pics:

As posted yesterday  PD's DIY chimney

...

With the propane/LPG connetctions

...

The oven inside the lower part of the Camp Oven Mate (small) from Southern Metal Spinners.

...

PD used all of this at home over the cool months.

Cool

Depends on what yer cookin' Jason, if I'm doing a baked meal I use both heat beads on and under and the gas ring under to crank the heat up then I turn the gas off after about the first ten minutes. As you can see the camp oven sits in the " Camp Oven Mate " with a lid over it, takes half the usual amount of heat beads as it  holds the heat in and doesn't suffer from heat loss due to the wind.
The heat bead starter you see in pics is just a piece of stainless steel chimney with a handle and a bit of mesh on the inside, I put my heat beads in it and start it with either a fire starter or my LPG burner, makes it easy.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

PD; Did you make the 'camp oven mate' or did you buy it. I've been experimenting with heat beads but haven't had the same success as with hot coals. I recently cooked a stuffed pumpkin (big stuffed pumpkin) in a 12 quart and used a heap of heat beads. I will have to construct a fire drum, i expect.
Regards,
Ned

Ned, the Camp Oven Mate is made by Southern Metal Spinners in South Australia.  I have a page on my website on how to use one.
