the way l get my heat beads going is to half, 3/4 or fill my chimney  (which are getting easier to find and cheaper to buy ) with heat beads then put and light 2 or 3 fire starter cubes underneath it. Leave them for 20-30 min then use as desired. the heat beads are ready to use once they start to ash up or turn white. hope this helps.
 

Its not burnt. Just really well done.
