Can anyone identify this bird? This bird is a frequent vistor (see atached photo)  to my backyard and I cannot identify it. I was hoping someone would be able to help.

I have the Simpson & Day Field Guide to the Birds of Australia with me.

It looks like a juvenile Oriental Cuckoo (cuculas saturatus) to me.  According to the book they are silent.

Cheers

I think it could depend on where your "backyard" is Murray.
The oriental cuckoo is a migratory bird which arrives in n. Au. and travels down along the coastline about to the nsw/vic. border but does not cross w. over the divide.
The pallid cuckoo has an Au. wide distribution, it is perhaps more likely to be "your" bird.

Derek @ Mikel

I found one in the bird book and it could be the Common Koel (Eudynamys scolopacea) same colour as the immature bird in the book. Mikel I live south of Newcastle 20Ks.

Hi Muzz,
have you had anymore sightings of this bird? I reckon I have one of them also, obviously juvenile but this one does have a call ,which I can only describe as similar to an hawk or small eagle (not as loud of course) I have not seen it in company of other birds and the Magpie Mates do not like him at all.
I understand that this bird can be (or is) parasitic and sneaks into the nests of other native birds then lays it's eggs leaving others to raise it's young.
I would like to know, so if anyone has some more information could you share please.

All the best
