I've just signed up to this site as it comes up just about every time I search for something to do with camping. Must be good then!

My husband and I started camping again about 12 months ago now the kids have grown up. Blessed freedom! Its great really as it means we can come home from work on a Friday afternoon and if we feel like it, throw the gear in the back of the ute and start driving. We've just graduated from a tent and bought ourselves a little camper trailer (Oztrail Camper 6). We are heading to Batemans to the big show next weekend for our first trial of the camper.

We've also just bought a cast iron camp oven but its only a small 2 quart. Does anyone have any good recipes they've scaled down for 2 people? I guess I can try some of the ones posted and modify them, but as this will be my first go at using a camp oven I'd like to try something that has worked for someone else!

Cheers
Kat

Hey Kat
Just give it ago you have nothing to lose and every to gain, go enjoy your self, If you bugger it up and we all have at some time, fall back on some thing you can cook, but don't give up you will master it and that is part of the fun. The camper sounds just great

Hi Kat

I just put up a damper recipe in a little camp oven.  As Muzz said, give it a go.  Small roast to start with.

Kat
A friend of mine has one of those little fella's, I think I laughed at him the first time I saw it Grin

He does a nice little stew or casserole in his, wich would be great for 1-2 people.
I think though you will be searching for a larger one before long, it is handy having more than one to do your vege's seperate from the meat. may be go two sizes larger then they will pack inside each other.
But for the mean time go for it, you wont be dissapointed.

I still can't convince him to stop washing his with detergent though Lips Sealed

gday kat, just my 2 cents worth get yourself a bigger oven then you will have 2. one for meat and spuds and stuff and 1 for cooking some greens. I often just cook for 2 as I am not quite confident enough to cook for the whole camp site yet but here is a recipe that doesnt fail to please.

4 lamb shanks
1 tin crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup white wine
1 teaspoon crushed garlic
1 tablespoon soy sauce

put tomatoes, wine, garlic and soy sauce into CO stir around then put in your shanks and a few peeled potatoes cut in half. I set my CO up on heat beads to bake at around 160 degrees and stir occasionaly. after an hour turn over your shanks and potatoes and let it go for another hour. pull your shanks and potatoes out, by this time the meat is almost falling off the bone. mix a bit of corn flour and water and thicken the sauce then just spoon it on your shanks and potatoes. while this is all cooking you have plenty of time to cook up some greens and finish off the rest of the left over wine.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I've tried a couple of things now- with varying success! I think you're right though, I'm going to have to get a larger oven to do any good. Especially making damper as a tiny one is really not enough!

Also got to spend more time in camp to let things cook in the oven. Its difficult on a small gas stove too but I'll stick with it. Will have a go at putting a small gas ring on top of the oven to help with the cooking. Does that work ok?

Kat

Could you fit a small chook in that one Kat??
you cant go wrong with a chook,
probably the best thing there is for doing a chook is the o'l black pot!!!

dont know about the gas ring on top though, the heat will probably rise away from where you want it.
They really are designed to have a shovel full of hot coals both top & bottom so that the heat is "inducted" in to the cast iron, my opinion is that gas burners are only any good for boiling or seasoning them.

G'day Kat, I did chicken drumsticks (6) in green curry for dinner tonite, just too easy. The recipe is on the back of the "Trident" green or red curry packet. A can of coconut milk, half a cup of peas and another half of beans a carrot and I let it simmer for an hour on my small LPG burner and did rice in a separate pot, a cheap and easy meal for two. BTW that was in an 11" pot.
I carry my 8" pot inside my 11" when travelling, it fits like a thumb in, er, a hand in a glove. I rarely cook in my van when we're on the road.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd
