Can you adjust the brightness on that kero lamp?

I have one and I can't seem to be able to adjust the brightness.

Stuffing around with the metho is a PITA! [/quote]

Henry,

only a little,
I find if I turn it down it clogs up the "generator"
one of which I have already replaced

I usually turn it down just enough to take the "roar" out of it in the hope it saves me a little kero (yet to be proven)

Do the duel fuel lanterns put out such a "white" light like the kero Derek??

A bloke I used to work with has an old chinese one, coated in chrome & nearly twice the size of the coleman, you should see the light that thing hurls out, not to mention the amount of kero needed to drive it!!
you could play a full sized footy field with it.

not to take any thing away from the coleman though, it puts out a very White light which can be seen on the trees 100 meters away.
I often use mine to play a game of Boule' (half stung of coarse) & it throws enough light to see the jack at least 15-20M away.

Mick.

Yep it's a very white light however there is little adjustment on it.  Agree about leaving it up high to prevent the generator clogging.

Must admit I haven't used unleaded in either my stove or the light yet, preferring shellite.  They say it burns cleaner and is less likely to clog than petrol.  At  $4.00 a litre for shellite though it can get a little expensive after a few days.

I did see in a shop the other day though a generator for my stove model that is for unleaded fuel.  I wonder if they have done something to them to prevent the clogging.  Like a lot of shop assistants these days none could tell me.

Just as an aside, when my family emigrated to Australia from the old country in 1959, we lived, like a lot of people in a house without electricity.

We had a Tilly lamp, only one, and a couple of hurricane lamps and also a little kero single burner Primus stove.  Most cooking was done on an old black cooking range or over the open fireplace.

I remember my dad spending ages at times cleaning out the jets on the stove and light.

Also had a kero fridge as well.

How times change.

I can still see what you are looking at in your past. I could go on for some time about old times. My Grandfather said he new someone who had  more pricks than a second hand Primus.

Henry

The Tilly Lamp is the same as the Coleman in that it works on pressure.

The hurricane lamp had a wick that soaked up the kero.  Pic below

Quote from Henry
"Yeah! Mine is either fully on or fully off. It doesn't like the standed household blue kero either. It prefers the clear kero. Maybe the generator is clogged. If so, how do you unclog it?"

The generator has a very fine needle & jet in the top, each time you shut off the gas, the needle pierces the jet to clean it.
It's very easy to damage & you probably wont get it cleaned out properly anyway.

My advice is to buy a new generator, they come with both needle & jet assembled & all you need do it unscrew the nut at the bottom & replace it for about 10 or 12 bucks I think!

Derek,
Tilley still in production?
now there is a thought, I wonder how they go with spares????

Mick.

Another in valuble piece of gear...the replica tiley lantern.

Mick.

I have the exact same light & as you said it is either on or off, & so bright it used to bug me so I made a thin stainless cover for half the glass, when it's in the shed i aim it toward the wall so it reflects back, better than being blinded Smiley
It was from coleman seconds, it cost me 50 bucks, i also looked at the petrol ones which light without preheating, but thought the fumes in the shed wouldn't be nice
