What would you say are your most important bush camping items that are a must on any trip?????

List them below

I actually have two.

The first is my toilet kit.  It consists of a waterproof toiletry bag that contains a toilet roll, bottle of strong disinfectant for cleaning toilet seats and anti-bacterial soap for the hands after.  Together with this is a small shovel for digging the obligatory hole if there isn't a toilet nearby.

...

The second one is my First Aid Kit.  This, when I bought it, was designed specific to off roading and extended bush stays.  Since then it has had all sorts of things added to it.

My old Joseph Rodgers "bunny" knife, complete with pricker and tweezers.
Doesnt seem to matter what I do, where I am, there is always a splinter needs pulling.
(Actually my grandfather was all his working life with Joseph Rodgers & sons, so I do have a nice little collection of their cutlery)

Was going through some old camping gear yesterday and came across a roll of toilet paper ahhhhhhh ringwipe for you bushies who are uncultured now I know that this is an area of may we say delicaticy hope I hit enough of the right letters there anyway to get on with the story a number of years ago you could purchase this paper that was like sheets of glass both in softness (none at all) and slickness I gotta tell ya fellas this paper is that slippery you have to start wiping from the back of your neck and hope your aim was good enough to clean up on the way through once it was over you couldent go again until you got over the trauma and your hand healed from the damage done hitting the ground so hard. ended up farming the rolls out to people I didnt like just to get rid of it knew there was something unpopular when caught that better half with her own private stash iunder her side of the bed

most important part of your camping kit but dont buy cheap stuff

cheers Fueph

Paper, PAPER ? What's wrong with youse pansy's, a handful of gum leaves has always served me well, just don't confuse 'em with stinging nettles ina the dark.
I reckon a long handled shovel is pretty important, whackin' tiger snakes that wander into your camp, digging out the 4x4 where you ventured into bottomless sand off the track, digging holes for business mentioned in the first paragraph, putting coals onto and under your little black pots, covering your fire when you break camp, PHEW, the list is endless, yep a very necessary bit of gear.

I've got one of those Mick.  Mine is a duel fuel (unleaded petrol or shellite) and has two mantles.

Can you adjust the brightness on that kero lamp?

I have one and I can't seem to be able to adjust the brightness.

Stuffing around with the metho is a PITA! [/quote]

Henry,

only a little,
I find if I turn it down it clogs up the "generator"
one of which I have already replaced

I usually turn it down just enough to take the "roar" out of it in the hope it saves me a little kero (yet to be proven)

Do the duel fuel lanterns put out such a "white" light like the kero Derek??

A bloke I used to work with has an old chinese one, coated in chrome & nearly twice the size of the coleman, you should see the light that thing hurls out, not to mention the amount of kero needed to drive it!!
you could play a full sized footy field with it.

not to take any thing away from the coleman though, it puts out a very White light which can be seen on the trees 100 meters away.
I often use mine to play a game of Boule' (half stung of coarse) & it throws enough light to see the jack at least 15-20M away.

Yep it's a very white light however there is little adjustment on it.  Agree about leaving it up high to prevent the generator clogging.

Must admit I haven't used unleaded in either my stove or the light yet, preferring shellite.  They say it burns cleaner and is less likely to clog than petrol.  At  $4.00 a litre for shellite though it can get a little expensive after a few days.

I did see in a shop the other day though a generator for my stove model that is for unleaded fuel.  I wonder if they have done something to them to prevent the clogging.  Like a lot of shop assistants these days none could tell me.

Just as an aside, when my family emigrated to Australia from the old country in 1959, we lived, like a lot of people in a house without electricity.

We had a Tilly lamp, only one, and a couple of hurricane lamps and also a little kero single burner Primus stove.  Most cooking was done on an old black cooking range or over the open fireplace.

I remember my dad spending ages at times cleaning out the jets on the stove and light.

Also had a kero fridge as well.

How times change.

The Tilly Lamp is the same as the Coleman in that it works on pressure.

The hurricane lamp had a wick that soaked up the kero.  Pic below

Quote from Henry
"Yeah! Mine is either fully on or fully off. It doesn't like the standed household blue kero either. It prefers the clear kero. Maybe the generator is clogged. If so, how do you unclog it?"

The generator has a very fine needle & jet in the top, each time you shut off the gas, the needle pierces the jet to clean it.
It's very easy to damage & you probably wont get it cleaned out properly anyway.

My advice is to buy a new generator, they come with both needle & jet assembled & all you need do it unscrew the nut at the bottom & replace it for about 10 or 12 bucks I think!

Derek,
Tilley still in production?
now there is a thought, I wonder how they go with spares????

I have the exact same light & as you said it is either on or off, & so bright it used to bug me so I made a thin stainless cover for half the glass, when it's in the shed i aim it toward the wall so it reflects back, better than being blinded Smiley
It was from coleman seconds, it cost me 50 bucks, i also looked at the petrol ones which light without preheating, but thought the fumes in the shed wouldn't be nice

Henry,
why replace the lamp???
a new generator is only 10 or 12 dollars,
I have the original box & parts manual for mine, if you need part numbers I can scan & Email the manual.
get spare parts from any coleman outlet or camping store, just order them.

Here are a few of my Tilley lamps. Prefer the old Tilley with the double tie mantle, stands up to travel vibration much better than the Coleman single tie one.

Iv'e been looking at the tiley website & noticed they are calling them a "Parafin Pressure Lamp"

I thought the old Tilley's ran on Kero?
how easy is it to get hold of parafin?

I was thinking of buying one,
The coleman is a good thing but I would like a genuine Tilley, (hint.. hint ..Mike Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes)

looks like I've opened a can of worms with the kero lantern,
we've gone away from the subject a bit.

Hate to bring up the subject of lanterns again, but does anyone remember the old carbide lamps? Dangerous little buggers, I was only a nipper when we used to use them but from memory they mixed carbide and water together which gave off the combustible gas.
Anyway fishing and crabbing gear for me, other wise camping is just drinking beer in the bush, but the main necessity is my little camping and fishing mate (Taylor) in the picture below. This was taken on the O'connell river just south of Proserpine.

Cute pic Robbo.

I saw one of those old carbide lamps at a market on Sunday.  Was one of the old brass ones.

Yeah even cuter in real life (lucky she gets her looks from her mother). You may get to meet her if we can make the COG.

That gas given off from the carbide powder & water is pure Accetylene, unstable as hell on it's own. I know an old black smith & thats how they made it back in the day. When you get in bottles (oxy / accet,) it has a given amount of Acetone (liquid) in the bottle to keep it stable, that's why you should never lay accetylene bottles on thier side, the acetone can leak out & leave the gas unstable!!

Now back to the subject of lanterns (Heh heh I'm like a mongrel dog with a bone) I dont know if it makes a much difference but I use kero lanterns filled with citronella oil in an attempt to keep a few of the bities away.
