thanks derek, I have been lookin around for one for a while and buggered if I can find one in a shop anywhere. I do know you can get them on-line , so the max bid I put in will be influenced by what I can get a new one from southern metal spinners.

cheers

DH saw it on ebay same time as this post, his cheque was already in the mail and ours arrived yesterday so there wont be any competition from me  Cheesy

? for anyone who has and uses one how hot does the bottom of the sides it get?   Would you need to stand it on metal etc on a plastic table?  I dont particularly like to work off the ground.

Carolyn

When Bill Thompson of Southern Metal Spinners designed the Camp Oven Mate he sent me one to trial. They are designed to have heat only from the bottom.  The design of the lid radiates the heat downwards onto the top of the camp oven.  What we did find however was that sometimes in order to get a nice "brown" on things like breads and scones you should take the lid off the camp oven but leave the lid on the camp oven mate for the last part of cooking.

You can use gas, heat beads or coals with them.

Yes they do get hot and I would be very cautious about using one on a plastic table unless you have something that will raise it sufficiently above the table like a few besser blocks.

The bigger model was originally made for a few blokes in Queensland who had 15" Furphy camp ovens.

Thanks for the info Derek, I am ready to give both my new toys a tryout asap.

I had figured that taking the top off the oven might be the way to go.  It will be trial and error I expect.
Old advice from my "Domestic Science" school day cooking teacher was that you NEVER opened
the oven for the first ten minutes  Smiley the time factor for one of the things I want to
try is 10-15 which might work out at 20 in  a camp oven so I hope they would brown in that time.

I am tossing up whether to try the Bedourie without the Ovenmate.  Its very windy here today
so I will ponder longer  Cheesy.

The DH is keen to try out the Ovenmate for his favourite shanks using gas and has gone out to
get a suitable gas ring.

I have never actually used a Bedourie in the Camp Oven Mate.  Bill recently released his new range of Aussie Camp Ovens.  They are now in the shops and I have the full set as they come in 10", 12" and 15" models.  (Bill is a bit old fashioned like me and hasn't yet gone to metric) I can see these actually outselling the Bedourie in the future.  The difference being the lid is up the other way to better hold the coals and the rounded bottom.

They also have a better handle system with double handles.

I am in the process of doing a few running tests with them.  I can see the 15 inch one being great for a baked ham or large pork leg roast.

Here are a couple of pics.

Guys

I have both the 12" and the 15" oven mates and use both a 2 ring and a 3 ring gas burner with them and both work great

things to watch for are
1. reduced cooking time up to an hour faster cooking time on roasts
2. turn the gas down when you have your oven hot I found that you only need a very low flame
3. removing the top of the mate is the same as only having coals below the oven leaving the oven mate top on is the same as placing coals on the camp oven lid
4. removing the camp oven lid lets your vegies brown beautifully

I use the oven mates in my BBQ area with the gas most times now and I for one cant tell the difference in the finished cooked product but it sure makes cooking easier and gives a whole new ability to entertain at home without any hassles

I have found that the 12" mate wont accept my old stye 12" Furphy and that is why I went to the 15" mate works on ovens from 10" to 15" my 15" is a cheap chinese oven but works great in the mate I also can use my 12" oval oven in the bigger mate

heat can rsdiate down the side of the mate but I havent found any problems using the mate on a timber table but if you wish you could cut a 12mm ply board to sit the setup on
I actually use my 6mm aluminium cooking table to sit mine on

cheers Furphy

As Derek says enjoy

We've arrived at the same result Furph, I use my COM on the patio several times a week and its worth its weight in little gold chips, er well almost.
Its big advantage is that it comes to pieces and travels almost flat when we're on the wallaby, storage room is very important to me, any more camping stuff and I move into the B double category. lol.
BTW I like the look of the new Dr Livingstone ovens, sh*t , more stuff to buy, how many ovens is enough ?

pd

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd
