Hi troops,

Thought I'd ask you all regarding the heat beads on TOP of the oven.

I have a chimney to start the beads and all goes ok..

I put whatever in the oven and cook also ok BUT after I notice that the HEATBEADS on the top have not turned to ash like the bottom ones.

In fact I have been able to re-use the top ones by restarting them again which brings me to the question "why don't they fully burn out"

Confused?? Me too!!! (They are genuine heatbeads brand as well....)

Grrr!!! Huh

I have never had that problem.  In fact in the photo below these beads have been going for over an hour. Mine usually keep going until nothing is left.  The only thing I can think of is that you may not be leaving them in the chimney long enough.

I am a novice at this to, Derek's suggestion could be on the mark, the other thing do you cook with the top on? The beads may not be getting enough air( circulation) try it with the top off. I don't have any problems with the top beads burning away.

CD.
A little bit of lateral thinking could be the go here.
You have made a very nice lidded enclosure with what (to me) looks like an air regulator at the bottom.
Now with the heat beads being the fuel, oxygen is required to keep them burning, which is coming in at the bottom so all OK there.
However, because the enclosure would be fairly airtight with the lid on, the heatbeads on the bottom would have consumed all the oxygen (well, pretty much all of it) leaving only CO2 for the ones on top to struggle with.
Hence the self extinguished heat beads.
A soluton may well be a series of small holes around the shell at about the level of the C/O top.
The unit I made from an old washing machine spinner is perforated all round, so have never had a problem with heat beads on top of the oven going out.
I feel that all that is required with an enclosure is to keep a direct breeze off the oven, the perforated metal (in my case) being adequate to reflect heat back onto the oven sides.
Hope this makes some sense.

Crazy-Dog, Just read mikel's response which sounds like the answer. Before you drill any holes just see if leaving them in the starter chimney a bit longer works.
BTW I like your cooker, very Mickey Mouse, is it a bought one or something you made yourself ? If you made it how did you form the domed top ?

Thanx for the input troops.

The cooker is an old 9kg gas bottle with the top cut off with a cutoff wheel in an angle grinder.

The top has a funnel that DRAWS the air up from the bottom (there are a buncha holes in the base greater in area than the funnel area) and out the top just like a chimney.

This arvo I did another apple pie but left the top right of until the pie was done . I will see shortly if the beads burn right out or not coz they are sitting on a tin tray now next to the oven...

I shall report....
