Has anyone got one of those little camping stoves.  I take mine all the time on day trips.

Hillbilly http://www.campingwithhillbilly.com/ have put out a neat little hot plate for them.  It even has a fold down handle.

I have one in the car all the time and also take it fishing with me. The grill plate looks good but I have one I got at BCF for $9.00 which does a real good job on fish & steak-The flavour is outstanding with the flame grill.
All the best

A SAD TALE OF A PORTABLE STOVE

...     This is what I did to one!!!!

We set off for a few days at Hillend with our single daughter and her two children.  We arrived and the DH and I had no trouble with our tent, the daughter was doing reasonably well but the grandson was in all sorts of problems with his small tent.  We eventually with rather noisy communications between us all got settled for the night.   The next day was spent fossicking etc and then that evening we decided to boil some new potatoes on the cute little stove the DH had got for a song!!!   He put it on and wandered off drink in  hand to chat.   We sat a far distance away from it.  I went to check it but it seemed to be not alight. Now I am not confident with gas stoves at all.   My daughter checked it and we relit it or so we thought after me flicking the switch several times with some considerable force, we went back to our chairs and the children went off to climb trees with some others they had met.

BANG!!!!! an almighty explosion echoed around the camp.... people ran from everywhere, they thought one of us had shot the other after hearing us the night before  Grin.

Pieces of the stove, the billy, the water and the potatoes were everywhere at quite some distance from each other!!!!!!!

No one could understand how this could happen, there was supposed to be some kind of saftey cut-out, we were just grateful no one was cut to pieces or burnt from the flying debri.  The DH felt he had done nothing wrong and of course was not popular with SWMBO who was already nervous of gas.

The manufacturers said there was a clear sticker showing which way was up and that it couldnt be ignited if the wrong way and this was the first time they had heard of one blowing up, they obviously hadnt met me  Grin.  STICKER!!!!  DH didnt see any sticker (this was later found loose in the box). So although these things are handy take care and look for the STICKER  Cheesy

Wow Carolyn that could have been quite nasty.  Lucky you weren't all close by.

Skip, you mentioned having one in the car all the time.  I have always been very wary of the heat generated in the car when parked in the sun and have often wondered how much heat the little cans of gas can stand before they blow.

Nice layout Carolyn  Wink

Here's my jiffy outdoor stuff, old style backpacking gear.  Still useful.  You have to carry white gas, but it doesn't take a lot of room.  Take one container out, heat things up and be gone in 1/2 hour, dry dishes & all, full thermoses of tea & coffee......

...

That pic is during my 2006 Labrador trip.

Cool

White Gas is what we call Shellite or Coleman Fuel.  I use it in both my Coleman duel fuel stove and light.

Good point Derek!, I had figured the the temps reflected down from the pan or plate would be no less that what the internal temps in my car were. Having now said that and seeing Carolyn's disaster first hand I won't tempt fate & will immediately remove it from my car. I might have just been lucky carrying it for over 9 years in the car.
Carolyn did they replace your Stove?

Regards Skip

I just pulled over at what had been/was someone's camp.  Clearly had had no attention in 2006, what with all of that growth.  No path to the water, for one.

Great little stoves arn't they, Mine is a camp master brand, use it any where, work road trips (save on motel food), in the boat when fishing, & real handy for doing the gravy for the CO roast instead of dodging the heat of the fire to stir all the time.

Ive been looking at making a hot plate which fits in the suite case with the stove so I dont have to carry a fry pan as an extra.

Mick.

Yes Skip they did send a new one and this one had the sticker stuck on and we knew for sure that ours had been fitted upside down.  It shouldnt have fitted or turned the gas but I was ignorant and lit a match  Cheesy I shudder every time I think of it and the damage it might have caused to one of us.

That's a real interesting post Carolyn & a particularly valid 'safety share' as these little stoves are so widely used.
That'd be about as cheap a lesson as anyone could get, especially for those of us reading about it here. I've never heard of it under those circumstances & the photo really drives the point home. Glad no one was hurt.
Have to agree with Derek, you've got a knack for the layout - works fine for me.
Hooroo for now Smiley

Away this time, I went to boil the billy on the two burner gas - now I have already admitted to being a dummy on gas and the next thing the pipe had flames coming from it.  I didnt really know which way turned the gas up or down so I just ran...........screaming.........daughter ran in and threw a tea towel over it and I yelled again as I could see the flames just getting higher while she thought it would put it out......fortunately Sparkey ran for the gas bottle and turned it off there.   So of course I yelled again at Sparkey for not testing it properly when he screwed it all together.

Daughter is now convinced he is trying to do me in  Grin as this is the second calamity that has nearly happened to me while she was camping with us.

It did make me realise that some sort of fire extinguisher or fire blanket to smother a small fire should be close to hand in the annexe.

Now I do make the best wood fires you have ever experienced - I don't chop the wood though  Cheesy - I think I should keep to what I am good at.
