Thanks Everyone for your welcomes.   I will have to try the roast chicken, I think we'll have to go heatbeads with that as I don't think we'd get enough heat (or a fire that would last long enough to cook a chook with just wood).

Violet,
The main trick with camp ovens is to use your oven seperate from the fire,
eg, get a good fire going then shovel some coals away from it to form a little bed to suite the size of your oven, sit your oven on top then put another shovel full on top of the oven as you did in the hole!!!
this way you don't destroy your fire & you can stack it up for the next shovel full, you don't need to dig a hole either unless wind is a problem in which case you can use something as a wind break anyway.

This is the set up I use at home, not nescessary in the bush as scorch ing a bit of grass is not a problem.

...

Derek, I find the little bit of oil is good for judging temperature, when it is right you can hear the oil popping like chips in a deep frier.

I tried to use heat beads again the other night & couldn't keep them alight, even the ones on top so I had to light the fire any way.
I'm stick'n to the fire from now on.

Mind you the wild goat was spectacular!!!...even better than the venison I have done in the past, same way..marinated in red whine & herbs. sorry did'nt get any photos before it dissapeared Grin Grin Grin

10 points for innovation Mick, the dog bed supporting yer 44 gal drum is very tricky ! Like Muzz says, council clean up days are a great source of material for the likes of you'n me. I never drive past an old bed, the angle iron can be used for so many things like my 6' x 6' stand for my little black babies. Have also picked up the odd Sunbeam fry pan, sheets of aluminium for my camp oven table but haven't yet found an old Furphy.lol

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd
