bf, I've gone from a Bedourie to a cast iron oven but to answer your question, I never had any trouble with the rivets on my Bedourie.
There's a link somewhere on this site showing a modification to the lifting ears especially on the lid, Derek replaced the triangular ears with square ones with lifting hooks to suit. You probably know the lid likes to tip over and dump ash and coals in your dinner when you're lifting it off,  I've done it several times.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

Have you thought about Hillbilly camp ovens? I have the bushking and the smaller one, also the gas attachment. Does great roasts and with the vege ring you can do great roast spuds , scollop potatoes and cauliflower and cheese sauce. With the gas attachment you can have a feed all year round. We have a roast in the oven every sunday during summer, but nothing beats  sitting around a fire cooking with coals! Just a thought!

This is the link Derek sent when I was enquiring about lid lifter modifications
http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/modifiedbedourie.htm
Look in Camp Ovens on the opening page of this site & you will find photos & comments of Derek's first camp oven, a Bedourie.
I have both types of ovens & although I haven't used them a lot I am happy with both. Maybe need to watch the heat a bit more on the Bedourie.

G'Day BF,
Other folks may have info to the contrary (I'd like to hear if any) but don't let the rivets in the Bedourie bluff ya. I shouted myself one maybe 12 months ago when starting to put together a bit of kit & I reckon it's a ripper. I feel the majority will agree that the spun steel ovens are a first class product. I agree that they can certainly be made more user friendly with mods like the one PD refers to, as it's sure easy enough to do Grin (tipping ash on ya tucker)
I think Derek actually put a link up, not so long ago, with photos of the improved design for the lifters. I'm not sure where to find them now but I'm sure any of the regulars will be able to help direct you.
G'day Maloney, I've often looked at the hillbilly gear with more than an interest but as yet, I haven't bought anything. Obviously you are having plenty of sucess with some of the gear. I'm pretty sure they do the 'hot water' drum don't they? Looks like an old 20lt paint tin. Easy enough to make, bit of a bugger to pack though. Love the idea all the same. Has anyone got one or seen them used?
Regards,

Yo Shane,

Just how good are the Hillbilly range.

I have been agonising over these or the southern metal spinners stuff.

I like the idea of the extension rings as well...So just how good and how much please...

Grrr!!!

Crazy Dog,
there a good camp oven, easy to clean and use. The gas attachment just makes it easier to use, kind of set and forget. The extension ring makes it easier to control heat, say full spuds in vege ring dont burn on top. So you've got roast in base, vege's in ring and gravy boiling on top all of one burner. Still can't beat sittin around a fire with a beer and good mates cookin a feed.

I reckon that if ever the rivets fell out, Bill Thompson at Southern Metal Spinners would give you a new one.
