Hi
I'm a new poster to this forum, and have just started getting into camp oven cookery - in fact I did my first ever cooking in the oven today - a roast chicken. Put it  in the oven for three hours and it came out really good, but I bought one of the cheap chinese camp oven (with legs) from my local camping store and I am wondering if the legs are too short! The coals underneath the oven keep going cold, so I assume it's lack of oxygen? If so, I'll have to get a trivet or something. I ended swapping out the bottom coals three times and and having to heat them up again...

Cool thanks for that. It's probably what I said - lack of oxygen. I looked at some other camp ovens today and saw that they did have longer legs - so the moral is to check the length of the legs before you buy! I cut some lengths of tube and fitted them over the existing legs to make them longer so will see if that cures the issue.

Hi Paul and welcome.

Mate thats a brilliant idea what you have done there.  Must remember that one myself.

Is the camp oven a Furphy.  I know they have very short legs.

No, it's just a cheapy chinese. I tested with it's new longer legs and yes, they made all the difference - the coals stayed alight with no problems.
This time I cooked a loaf of bread and it turned out ok the coals stayed alight on the bottom just the same as on the top. Result

What do you do with your furphys then derek do you put them on a stand?

I have got the older Furphy's and they have longer legs than the new ones.

The Camp Chef and Lodge Ovens have really long legs.

Hi Paul
I saw the remark that you cut some tube and made the legs longer. The way I normally use a camp oven is to dig a hole and put the coles in the bottom to warm it only for if there is too much heat there you burn the goodies in the bottom. Then apply the coles around the sides and the top and replace these as the cooking progresses . No burnt offerings and a successful cook.
Keep trying and good luck
By the way my one of my camp oven does not have any legs and doesn't' worry me
