Actually Julie, even McDonald's got in on it with their McOz Burger.  It too had beetroot in it.  I don't think they make this one anymore but here is a pic someone put up on the net http://www.travelpod.com/travel-photo/tracyleigh54/tracy_does_oz/1137001500/img_...

You can see the beetroot on top of the tomato.

Weirdo's hey! None of my American mates have a burger now without sliced beetroot, they are true converts.
When I lived in the US I saw 'em eating sausages, eggs & bacon with pancakes and maple syrup, on the same plate.

I'd ask for my Pancakes on a separate plate and everyone at Denny's looked at me as if I were the weirdo. Smiley

All the best

PS Great thread Julie!

Well, heck, why the dickens do you want your pancakes ona separate plate?  You're, I repeat you are going to wash two dishes, when you don't have to?  Not someone else, you would do this?

& do you say potato root, carrot root, parsnip root?

Beets are a root vegetable, the same as potatoes or carrots or parsnips?

BTW do you all eat beet greens?

Huh

I can 1/2 way understand the salad thing.  That's more common here.   Often with the salad as a first course, not a part of a one course meal.  Unless I have a salad as a snack, I don't use the separate bowl or plate or.....  That's washing more dishes than you have to.

Huh

OK, so how do ya'all cook the beet?  Do you just boil it?  Do you slice it first and then cook it, or cook the beet whole and then slice it?

I'm assuming it's cooked, and not raw, as beets are WAY too hard to eat raw, right?

I love beets, and so does Greg and the girls, but I'm not sure I could convince them to try one on a burger!    Cheesy

Derek -- that's a great picture!  I'd never have believed it if I hadn't seen it!     Smiley

Boiled whole, cooled then sliced.

The canned ones are in a type water/sugar/acid brine.
