I know it must seem a tad boring in culinary terms but I like cooking steaks and sausages, bacon and eggs on the fire using my cast iron frying pan

But now I found my cast iron tripod and I am considering getting a cast iron camp oven for the first time so i can hang it from the tripod's hook.

but how is it for using as a frying pan? anything I need to be aware of using it as a frying pan like that ?

Welcome Burgerman

Hope you enjoy the site.
Are you from anywhere near Brisbane?

I have often used the upturned lid of a camp oven as a frying pan.
Place a modest shovel of coals to the side of the fire.
Turn the CO lid upside down on the coals, allow for some transfer of heat to the cast iron, add cooking oil and start frying away.

You could do the same with an upright CO, but that means a lot more to clean afterwards. Also more difficult if frying eggs or anything else that may need flipping..eg pancakes.

Each to their own mind you.

Hi and thanks for the response

Yeah I am from Byron Bay area which is two hours drive south of brisbane.

I will have a look tommrrow and see what I can get in terms of shape and size.. i didn't think about the egg flipping issue. Perhaps If i buy a huge family sized oven it might not be so bad

Hi Burgerman and a very warm welcome to the forum.

I agree with TBF's comments regarding the depth and flipping food.  If you really want a cast iron frying pan then Camp Chef make some very good ones.  They are only available in Australia from Anaconda Stores.

Cheers
