Barb, with the price of meat skyrocketing its easy enough to get small roasts these days.  I have one marinating as I type.  Not sure if you watch Hueys Cooking Adventures but he did a Moroccan Rump Roast the other day.  I am confident it will adapt well to CO.  He used 4 Kg but I got a small looking 2K.  I must say it looks very puny to what we see get cooked in here, but as they say horses for courses and mostly we are only two.

Robbo if we dont eat the lot and usually it tastes so good the MOTH backs up for seconds and more its good for lunch or as a shepherd or cottage pie another night.

I have Hueys Tales And Recipes From A Traveling Cook book and have adapted many of them for the camp oven.

Have also seen him cook things and put certain ingredients together that would never touch my lips  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Not sure if thats a personal recommendation or not Derek  Cheesy.

If it reads good it usually tastes good I think.  Seeing its freezing here and I am still in PJ's and not in the mood for doing what I orta Smiley I went and took my small roasts photo.

We have more a problem of getting large roasts.  We are having a family Xmas in July to celebrate 3 of us being Leo's and it took one daughter 4 shops to get a Buffet Turkey.  Another is having similar problems getting a large enough leg of ham to glaze and bake.

Last week the MOTH won a "leg of ham" so he said!!!  It was more like a 1/3rd size of a leg but it tasted ok and was enough with overs for us.

It rather amuses me as for many years at the real Xmas gathering I used to bake a 7K leg of pork and you just dont see anything that size in the supermarkets these days.

Depending on the weather if I go outside and cook it in the CO or wimp out and use the inside oven.

Carolyn if your weather is anything like ours today even I would cook it inside.  Tongue

I mostly just cook for me so I have no trouble getting a nice small roast.  Actually one of my favourites is a small round of lamb.  Does me just right in the camp oven

Looks good, Derek.  Mr Bear will probably have to work so won't be joining me at the campsite. Still planning to cook in CO.

The wood may be very wet.  I don't have a heat bead chimney yet. Do I need to put the head beads in something to heat them?  How long will it take for them to warm up?

Thanks
Barb

You can just pile them up Barb, & put a few fire lighters in the middle, but be patient, let them all get fully alight (red with a white ash all over) or try making a tube out of several layers of aluminium foil & poke some large holes around the bottom.

The self lighting beads are a little easier to light by just piling them up.

Be sure to light a few more than you need, this way you can use the left over hot ones to get another batch going for back up  Smiley

I didn't have a chimney for years.  All I used to do was pile them up on a trivet in my old frying pan with a few starters underneath and let them go.

Here are a few photos http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/charcoalasheat.htm

If there is one thing to stress and that is - MAKE SURE THEY ALLBURN DOWN BEFORE USING THEM.  By burn down I mean completely covered in grey ash and glowing red.  It is so important to maintaining good heat and not having them go out.  See the third photo down on the website.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Has been quite a frustrating week with daughter having complications after appendicectomy. She is improving slowly. This site has kept me sane!

Thanks for the link, Derek - haven't explored all the great tips on this website yet.

Aart - Yes, probably looks more like a Pappa Bear!!

Now to find the old frying pan.  By hook or by crook I am going to cook this weekend!!!!

5pm The roast and veggies are in the pot!!!

I decided that Brian and our daughter Robyn would like to share in the fare so tonight is the night!

Very frustrating with the heat beads, will definitely get the self lighting ones next time.  Used some fire lighters, but needed paper as well. However it was rather fun playing with the fire.

Just as the rain moved in, we moved the CO undercover.

Oven thermometer worked well!
