Tried my first foray into beads after over 20 years of using coals from fires.

Kept it simple with fruit scones.
1/2 A batch in the CO and the other 1/2 in the electric oven.

The electric oven scones were sensational.
No problems with the recipe   Smiley

The CO scones did not cook/rise Angry
Insufficient heat produced by the beads.

Lesson learnt:
Never use any old beads you have around the house.. (cheap leftovers)
Used a chimney to get them started..(thats not the problem}
Answer: Only use the good quality ones I saw at the COG.

Maybe I'll go to cooking with coals from a fire again.
Anybody want to buy a very slightly used chimney?

Na, I'll keep trying with the beads.
It's got to get better from here.

Don't give up TBF, I use a starter chimney over a single LPG burner to get my beads going and as you've learned use only good quality heat beads, I learnt that the hard way. I buy Bunnings "Hot Shots" and keep them in a plastic box with lid to keep them from absorbing moisture.

If I'm roasting a big piece of meat, two hours plus, I use the LPG burner to crank the heat up towards the end to finish it off. With a stew or casserole it doesn't matter so much if the heat tapers off.

Did lamb necks with rosemary dumplings last night for six people, they say self praise is no recommendation but it was bewdiful, sigh.

The first time I used beads I got a perfect result  Smiley but the the next two time I killed the bottom beads with lack of oxygen and had to use gas to finish the job off.  I'll get that problem fixed shortly.
Half the fun is the stuff ups, they're the ones everyone talks about usually with great roars of laughter, and at my expense. Angry

Keep trying

Keep at it TBF. I use "Heat Bead" brand from Barbques Galore or BigW. Main thing is to be sure they are well alight before taking them out of the chimney & plenty of ventilation under the CO.

You hit the nail right on the head.
It is very hard to light an inferior quality charcoal bead.
Won't buy that sh@t again.
When I was watching the Heat Bead fanatics at the COG, you guys did it with ease.
Just like I feel with coals from a fire.
Different tools are just going to take a little longer to learn.

Thanks to you all for the encouragement.

I look forward to that day mate.
More importantly I want the patients to make such a smooth custard, without any trace of lumps in it.

Logfire has hit the nail on the head here. I've never had a real failure with beads, however have found you get what you pay for. The less expensive low quality ones arent necessarily cheaper when you generally end up using more beads to get the same temperature as a quality brand or you have to fire up a second batch when the first ones burn out too soon.
Like Logfire I prefer to use the Heat Bead brand, good heat and last well.

Aart,
I was a die hard "coals from the fire" man.........who am I kidding........I still am, but the beads are convenient, particuly on a week night
It did take some persevering for me to get a handle on the beads, I only use the genuine "Heat Beads" brand & one thing I stopped doing was counting out & only using the exact number calculated (3 up & 3 down principal) instead I would light more than calculated & measure by the shovel full......some habbits die hard Grin Grin Grin Grin

Like you Mick,
I understand the numbers when they are sitting on the end of a long handled shovel.

Yep your right. Heat Beads play an important part in our cooking.Very convenient.
Don't believe me, well try telling me when it has been raining for a while & there is no easy to find fire wood.

I use those plastic Kitty Litter bottles to keep a 4Kg bag poured in. & It lives in the Wagon all the time.
I'll grab a snap when I get home from work.

Thanks for starting this thread Aart.  After all this advice, I think it is time to dive in and give heat beads a go.

What would be the simplest dish to try first?

Cant go wrong with a good old roast Barb. Just did a couple of chooks and veges in my 20"er again tonight. I agree with BillyBushCook though, it seems to go a bit better using a few more beads than the calculator suggests, and as I think Derek pointed out on another thread (sorry if it was someone else) you can always use a little oven thermometer to gauge the temp but I dont think its that critical. After a few goes youll work it out.
Good luck guys, by the way are the two B's going to make it to the CQ COG start of next year?

As I said I would post some snaps of how I keep my heat beads dry & in top condition. They will absorb moisture in wet conditions and they won't burn too well. I use the Puss Litter Bottles. They keep my car interior clean and the beads dry. I can get over 5kg in each of them.

There are over 3 full 10KG bags in those bottles. A good deal I reckon Smiley

BBQ Galore are running a special on Heat Beads at present.
Buy 2 x 10 kilo bags at $18 a bag and get a 7kilo bag for free.

How does that rate for prices.

Thanks Robbo for the cooking suggestion.

Great photos Skip. Will have to approach my "cat" friends for some suitable containers.

As for CQ COG - I thought it was about April?  Probably can't make it  this stage.

However we have the Millmerran weekend booked in.

Big W $12.23 for a 10KG Bag. That's 30KG for under $37.00 that's the everyday price and see them for around $10.00 per bag on special.
Only a few bucks in it RT

I am biting at the bit, guys!

I had a nose operation about 3 weeks ago and although it is healing, do not want to put it too close to a fire just yet!!!

Smiley   How can I smell if the food is burning!

I usually jump in feet first so this has taken EXTREME patience to wait for it to heal.

Don't worry - you will be the first to know!

Ok Robbo!

I am thinking of a roast, but when I have seen others cooking a roast for 2, they have been enormous - over 2 kg.  I will do large pieces of veg too, but will have to be in the same CO as I only have 1 pot at present!

Gee Barb
2kg!! and I thought I was a serious carnivore.
If its just me and the missus, Ill often get a lamb grenade from the butcher. Its like a little marinated rolled lamb roast about the size of your fist (well my fist, may be a bit bigger than yours) which is plenty for two.
As they are small you can still fit your veges in the same pot and the whole lot only takes about an hour to cook the lot.

Barb, with the price of meat skyrocketing its easy enough to get small roasts these days.  I have one marinating as I type.  Not sure if you watch Hueys Cooking Adventures but he did a Moroccan Rump Roast the other day.  I am confident it will adapt well to CO.  He used 4 Kg but I got a small looking 2K.  I must say it looks very puny to what we see get cooked in here, but as they say horses for courses and mostly we are only two.

Robbo if we dont eat the lot and usually it tastes so good the MOTH backs up for seconds and more its good for lunch or as a shepherd or cottage pie another night.

Not sure if thats a personal recommendation or not Derek  Cheesy.

If it reads good it usually tastes good I think.  Seeing its freezing here and I am still in PJ's and not in the mood for doing what I orta Smiley I went and took my small roasts photo.

We have more a problem of getting large roasts.  We are having a family Xmas in July to celebrate 3 of us being Leo's and it took one daughter 4 shops to get a Buffet Turkey.  Another is having similar problems getting a large enough leg of ham to glaze and bake.

Last week the MOTH won a "leg of ham" so he said!!!  It was more like a 1/3rd size of a leg but it tasted ok and was enough with overs for us.

It rather amuses me as for many years at the real Xmas gathering I used to bake a 7K leg of pork and you just dont see anything that size in the supermarkets these days.

...

Depending on the weather if I go outside and cook it in the CO or wimp out and use the inside oven.

Carolyn if your weather is anything like ours today even I would cook it inside.  Tongue

I mostly just cook for me so I have no trouble getting a nice small roast.  Actually one of my favourites is a small round of lamb.  Does me just right in the camp oven

Looks good, Derek.  Mr Bear will probably have to work so won't be joining me at the campsite. Still planning to cook in CO.

The wood may be very wet.  I don't have a heat bead chimney yet. Do I need to put the head beads in something to heat them?  How long will it take for them to warm up?

Thanks
Barb

You can just pile them up Barb, & put a few fire lighters in the middle, but be patient, let them all get fully alight (red with a white ash all over) or try making a tube out of several layers of aluminium foil & poke some large holes around the bottom.

The self lighting beads are a little easier to light by just piling them up.

Be sure to light a few more than you need, this way you can use the left over hot ones to get another batch going for back up  Smiley

I didn't have a chimney for years.  All I used to do was pile them up on a trivet in my old frying pan with a few starters underneath and let them go.

Here are a few photos http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/charcoalasheat.htm

If there is one thing to stress and that is - MAKE SURE THEY ALLBURN DOWN BEFORE USING THEM.  By burn down I mean completely covered in grey ash and glowing red.  It is so important to maintaining good heat and not having them go out.  See the third photo down on the website.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Has been quite a frustrating week with daughter having complications after appendicectomy. She is improving slowly. This site has kept me sane!

Thanks for the link, Derek - haven't explored all the great tips on this website yet.

Aart - Yes, probably looks more like a Pappa Bear!!

Now to find the old frying pan.  By hook or by crook I am going to cook this weekend!!!!

5pm The roast and veggies are in the pot!!!

I decided that Brian and our daughter Robyn would like to share in the fare so tonight is the night!

Very frustrating with the heat beads, will definitely get the self lighting ones next time.  Used some fire lighters, but needed paper as well. However it was rather fun playing with the fire.

Just as the rain moved in, we moved the CO undercover.

Oven thermometer worked well!

Well done Bears.
My second attempt at beads is also underway.
Also my first cook with the lewis and clarke 14 Camp Chef.
Those Heat Beads are really showing the way.
Half a leg of lamb, whole roasted spuds and sweet potato.

and a couple of kilkenny cans to keep the dehydration at bay.

Barb,
Use only three or four self lighters on the bottom and top off with standard beads it will cut down on expense and makes lighting easier..I hope all goes well with this attempt...Aart will battle if he's drinking Kilkenny..they use that down here to bath dogs for fleas. Grin

Leaving the spuds in for another 10 while the meat rests and is carved.

Success! The roast was cooked beautifully.  The potatoes were crisp. The pumpkin and sweet potato were cooked and tasted great.  The cooking smell was quite unique. The taste was yum!

The family were delighted that I had tried the CO at home.

Definitely be trying heat beads again.  Brian said we may need to get a CO table to cook on!

Brian and I have just stocked up on food as there is to be a truck driver's strike from tonight.  I showed Brian where the Heat Bead section was in the supermarket and we stocked up on more longer lasting firelighters.  He suggested having another CO this week! (Looks promising for getting another CO - on second thoughts, birthday is in Sept - just have to drop some hints!)     Roll Eyes

I wouldn't worry too much about the proposed truck strike. It is not really well supported out here on the road. The one thing that may impact is they are talking about picketing the refineries and stopping the delivery of diesel. If that does happen it will take a few days to filter through so you should have a fair bit of notice.

Thanks Shane.  I am not overly worried myself.  I do feel for our truckies though with the ever increasing costs.

It's a tough life for them.  I spent a bit of time at Tarcutta when I was at Wagga Wagga looking at the Truckies Memorial.  Also have the Slim Dusty CD with the song on it.

Owner drivers and farmers both seem to be getting screwed.

We all know the price of oil/diesel has risen, and yes the costs of food will rise as a result.. But should we be having the increases that we are experiencing.
The production cost to farmers is not being passed back to them.
The 2 big retailers are crying about rises, but owner drivers are not reimbursed the operating costs increases.

If the owner drivers could all afford to take a week off..The 2 bigs one might get the picture that they can't survive without the transport industry.
