I have a short & long homemade mair/tripod type lifters. I agree that yours would be easier to store and make. The bottom could be curved a bit to suit rounded lids (furphys etc) or left flat for the flat lidded models.
LogFire

I reckon the kiss system comes in here, leave it flat, but if you need to modify it..2 shifters, one either side, flick of the wrist and hey presto a bent one to suit whatever.

Robbo, you better send me a couple for evaluation and field trials.  OJ.

Seriously, the good points of yours are ease of storage and simplicity in making it but without actually trying one I don't think yours will hold a lid a firmly as the Mair type. I can turn a 15" lid sideways and shake it to get rid of the old coals without any chance of losing my hold on the little bugga.

In saying that I will make one just to see.

Mmmmmm, yeah you have a point there. May do it, Im not sure. Ill give it a go, but often when it comes to tipping off the old coals I just don the welding gloves and tip them off. The thing I like about this lifter is not having to get it in the perfect spot on the lid handle to balance it when Im just checking the feed (or more often than not showing it off for the onlookers)

That's exactly the great thing about the Mair lifter.   I've never used a lid lifter that gives you such complete control.

When using my "old" standard lifter, I also have to use the gloves to hold onto it to get the coals off and even though I have great gloves, it does tend to get a bit warm .  . .

Hey Robbo
That is a very simple lid lifter well done, even I could make one of those. I will go and buy a carton and think about it this afternoon.

Thats why I like knocking these things up at work when its quiet.
The materials are free, Mig welder, cut off saw, oxy etc at my disposal.....not to mention the cost of manufacture at home always starts with about $40 for the carton of inspiration. Grin

Being Stainless only get a slight bend even when held up with the flat horizontal, but still plenty of control.

The curved lid of the Albion poses no problem.

I even found when you drop the odd heat bead when pouring them on the lid of the camp oven it can be used like tongs to pick them up.

Oh sorry, why was I testing out the lifter?
