Did a little bit of a cook up for my mother in law at her retirement village tonight.
I cooked up a rolled rib roast, lamb roast, pork roast and chicken roll in the 20", a couple of fruit cakes in the 12 and a batch of mushroom sauce in the ten. The MIL's mates (about 20 in all) all brought a side dish or dessert each to accompany the meat.
Best part was the cook didnt have to pay for drinks.
I was a bit slack on the photo stakes, but here are a few I got.

Three of the roasts ready to go. The chicken roll went in a bit later.

The fruit cake mix, forgot to get a photo after cooked, turned out great though.

The mushy sauce simmering away. Bloody Beaudiful.

The litle stack.

Carved and ready to eat.

A big thumbs up from everyone.

Youd be surprised how much these oldies can eat. A good night was had by all and nothing but praise for the CO cuisine.

Great stuff Robbo
It is good to see that you take a interest in the old folk, they can some times be pushed into the back ground..I will bet some of the oldies have had a camp oven meal before, in days gone by. It will become a regular event now I would think. Good food and thanks for sharing and caring.

Wasnt actually a nursing home but I see where your going with the peanuts Skip. Its actually a great setup. They all have three bedroom brick homes, the grounds are tended to for them, theres a workshop, library, craft room, large heated pool and the building we were in is their own little tavern where they often hold fucntions complete with outdoor cooking area, kitchen, pool table and the like. (I know where I want to retire).

The fruit cake is the one from this site Lance and so simple, just fruit, SR flour and a tin of condensed milk.
Great bunch of folks and some do have CO's of their own that they wouldnt part with of course, but besides those with Cobbs the idea of using heat beads was something new for them. Tried to promote the website as much as possible of course.

Excellent spread, Robbo.  I am sure the residents would have lapped it up.

Yes, I have made the fruit cake in the electric oven and it turned out very well.

The more I see that firepit on your avatar George the more I think Im gonna have to build one.
Im in town and have an old pain in the ace neighbour so I dont think a pemanent pit would be the way to go, but one that I can move around depending on wind direction, that could be another thing...Mmmmmmm.
Thanks for the inspiration mate (now I just need the motivation)

Many years ago I saw a BBQ in a old steel wheel barrow the old chap could move it around and follow the shade in his back yard...and to stop the smoke blowing on the old girls washing... George it wont be long before I have fire pit the same as yours.

George, another project for you, I've seen brake drums made into camp ovens, fill the bottom in, a couple of ears, a plough disc with handle welded on for a lid and two strong men to lift it,  full of stew onto the fire.... feed an army.

George, I saw several of the said truck rim camp ovens at Millmerran in '06. The caterer was feeding stew to the mob, $10 a plate with a bit of damper and the queue was outta sight, an opening for a smart young lad like yourself !!  Grin

PD.Truck rims are huge, but would be a lot easier to convert to a cooking pot than a truck brake drum.(steel v cast iron.)
The company I work for scrap tons of both, now theres a thought for you,all those cooking vessels going to waste  Roll Eyes
cheers George Wink
