Can't help you with ID Skip but I have an oven with those unusual "swirl" marks inside the pot however the casting marks around the ears and lid handle are very different.
Not a bad little pot, tell us some more about it.

Thanks PD,

I picked it up in Gympie a few months ago. Some of the casting pock marks inside are quite deep(they must be nearly through) I don't know if this is a sign of poor casting or from an impurity in the iron.

Beneath the lid are three raised nibs to obviously let out the steam.

PD the swirly marks all over the oven ,like yours has me intrigued.

The bail arm is in three pieces, an arm coming up from each ear and a solid ring in the centre.
Once again I don't know if that would be original kit or manufactured later.

I don't remember what I paid for it but think it may have been 80 or 90 dollars. The seller told me it was extremely old but could not elaborate on that.

I was wondering if the cast spur on the bottom meant anything, but I don't know where to start looking for that symbol.

All the best

There was an old oven on ebay not long ago, I think it is in the 'Albion?' thread. Someone did mention that the cast spur was a method used in casting back in 1800's.
Might have a really old one there Skip.

Nice looking CO there Skip

I got an "F" for CO at high school. Embarrassed. I got no idea.
It sure looks like a keeper though.

Looks to me like you oven dates from 1500 AD to around 1775 AD. I say this as it looks like a sprue mark on the bottom of the base. Also, from the look of the casting marks on the lid and the base around the handels that they might be original to each other. Smiley

Will we ever know? Not likely. Dating cast iron can only be done based on what is visible (i.e. the sprue mark). Undecided

Any pics of the inside of the lid?

Best, Duncan

Duncan,  Spru mark dates are for North American ONLY.

I have not seen, except in photo an oven with a spru mark from the later part of the 20th century.

I have hesitated to speak up because I'm Canuck, not Aussie.  The idea of standards applying to all continents is really one that only arrives in the late 20th century.  Such international standards definitely do not apply to things very local, such as foundrys.

I suspect there are regional variations within N. America, too.

Remember it's only since World War II that the average Jill or Joe has been able to travel widely.  & sometime in the 50s & 60s before televisions  (ie. visual images) arrived in most N. American households, never mind India, central Africa, the Sobbo Steps, Gulag, etc.

Cool
