That CI at Charleville needs a lot of TLC

Mate we should organize a refurbishment trip to Charleville, a 20 litre  drum of olive, a couple of  angle grinders with wire brushes and a BBQ or 2. We could spruce them up in no time and maybe pick something up as well.

Perhaps a Mid West Qld COG

Put me down for it Kev.

Jono it’s great that you had a conversation with Gran Hickling; you are sure a great investigator. By any chance did you ask him?
(1)      What year he first started making camp ovens
(2)      What sizes he made
(3)      Was it for the WA market or for all over Aus
(4)      How many he made
(5)      Has he got one in is back shed he would sell
I am sure you would have asked all of the above, but if not give me is number and I will go and see him if he still lives in freo

Nelson, I tracked him down on the net, I have a taped interview of Gran the lovely ladies from either freo library or the museum posted to me. I would give them an email if ya that keen, (they where more than happy to help), I can't find the tape at present or I would send ya a copy. He told me his story just about word for word off the tape. 2 hrs later....... I would try and get the tape.

As for ya questions

1 - 1903???
2 - Pretty sure he made all the usual. 10,12,14 etc.
3 - Started at 1 for a bloke from Wellington Surplus Supplies (???), Perth. next it was fifty for him and a few for friends. Then they stopped dead - Taiwanese ovens hit the shores..... then they all broke (Taiwanese ones). he was the man again making heaps, then an order for 10000 for Japan (Think he canned that order) and so on..... He definitely sent them all over Australia, said he made 100's of em and they where still making em when he retired in about 1975??

I don't think he has one in his back shed, he was quite amazed/stoked that I wanted to find out about his ovens. Top bloke and would love to chew ya ear.

Cheers

Jono
