BILLY LID BOMBS

I used to make stinkbombs when we were kids
to freak out our parents and others.
I'd crush wattle seeds in jam jars with loose lids
add water, then hide with me brothers!

A shanghais made from a Y shaped stick
with its slingy thing made from bike rubber
would send the projectile flying real quick
spilling stinky stuff close to me mother.

At the old Hills Hoist she would be at work
hanging school duds and fresh footy gear
until the odour of the pop-topped bomb
made her shriek "You kids, come here!"

Well we scarpered as fast as our laughter allowed,
ran inside the hedge  at full pelt ...
We knew we'd cop it & eventually bow
when Dad arrived home with his belt.

It smelled worse than the long drop at old Grampa's farm
worse than his black silage heaps
We could smell it through dinner but smarting from harm
secret smiles, to ourselves, we did keep.

I haven't made stinkbombs for many a year
but sometimes in our blistering heat
the waft of a whiff of a wattle tree near
reminds me of childhood ... twas neat.

Heya Skip ... yep - I wrote, directed and acted that one ... only not in that order.  But I really must warn you that the {{{secret}}} recipe in the verse really works.  Crushed wattle seeds from dry pods about to twist open, water and some very fast feet to escape will earn you the enduring scorn of the Bomb victims.  Not a thing to be trifled with at our ages.  Getting out of the hammock takes a while!

Be safe!!

Of course ... *doh* ...

Remember when the world was a safer place and kids had dingas in their pockets and fire crackers to play with?  Remember blowing up your teachers mailbox with a string of double-happies?  Those were the days!!!
