Time I said hello in this section.

I have wanted to own a camp oven for years and have an interest in pre-electric/gas Galley cooking.  This came about due to my wife being brought up in the Kilkevan scrub where her father was one of
the old axemen (like you see in pictures in the Kingsthorpe Pub) and his father had a bullock team to take the logs to the sawmills at Maryborough and Gympie. Beryl was actually born in a tent in the Forest and rode a pony to the Kilkevan school. She has told me many tales of the galley cooking of her mother.
Unfortunately all the hand written recipes were given away and lost.
This frustrated me so I started collecting old cook books which has got out of control and takes up most of the spare bedroom. I search garage sales and the Lifeline Bookfest for such. Probably my best find was - "Mrs Beeton's Cookery  and Household Management" 5th impression 1963.  A first edition 1883 (from memory) would be worth about $3000 today. But I also have a lot of books from the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Quite amusing to see a couple of books explaining how to use the new gas and electric ovens to folks who had never used one.

As a Chef working in Army Bases and Boarding Schools around Toowoomba doing bulk cooking for about 200 using the latest computerised Combi Ovens, I became more and more interested in the old cooking methods.

I attended four Millmerran Festivals,  bought Outback Cooking in the Camp Oven, Absalom; Camp Oven Cooking Made Easy, Tommo; and The Kindred K(r)ook's Camp Oven Cook Book Millmerran 2002.

But that was as far as I got near to a camp oven.

Last week I took the plunge and bought two Furphy ovens for the Millmerran camp oven cooking workshop and needed seasoning information.

I joined an American Yahoo group, "dutchovencooking - The Art of Camp Dutch Oven Cooking"  after making unsuccessful searches for Aussie groups. I was amazed to receive an email from a Canadian group member advising me of this  site.  Thanks Vicky.   So here I am!!

David, nothing replaces doing.

Howdy from the northland.

Re. Mrs. Beeton  & Mrs Beeton's Cookery  and Household Management, I just did a quick search @ www.ablebooks.com  and found lots of listings.  Lowest price $35.00 US$.   Lowest price downunder $46.74.

As late as 1983 the 1963 printing was being stolen from libraries by those heading out to live off the land up here.  Actual case known to me was in Newfoundland.

Mrs. Beeton's book was the book used by many a lass (or maybe a lad or two) in North America for many a year.

Cool

However, via google.ca,  term 'rare books'  to Al Libris, search by title, narrowed, by their term 'first edition'.  Voila:

Just bought this classic collectable book:
WHO CALLED THE COOK A BASTARD? 1972 first and only edition by Brigadier Sir C. Stanton Hicks.
Paid $40.00 on eBay which is cheap!  Worth at least $80.00 but is not for resale.
