That would take you anywhere...as long as you had a support vehicle to carry the spares and a workshop crew.

Isn't it a shame that nobody makes "Real" 4wd's like these any more, not that I'm a big fan of the LandRover but at least they are a purpose built rig like the FJ 40 or the ultimate starting platform an old Zuke! or willies Jeep,
These things today with all the creature comforts, low slung, long wheel base, torsion bar susspension, cloth trim & no more aproach, ramp over or exit angles than a bloody Commadore, they are useless for any thing other than graded forestry roads or beach.
Having said that, I love my 4 Runner for camping & fishing but I would not call it a 4wd's A#%hole, the modified Zuke in my shed would eat it even with the front shaft removed!!!!!

Regardless of tyre size OJ, it is the size & weight that's the real killer, even though I run 10R muddies on the zuke (33's) whith a small diff center thats plenty of clearance, but even better is the small, light manauverability of the zuke to be able to "ride up on" or avoid the obstacles which the bigger vehicles have to try to straddle or go over, it is like comparing a Quad bike to a Unimog (Unibog, that's another story )
I can remember back when I was still on standard suss, & tyres, at the 87' 4wd clubs Jamboree at mt Seaview, I drove through a creek crossing without a hitch, in fact I didn't even know there was a big snag in there, then later that same day we went back to that same spot to "Watch the big boys in action"
It was the ARB team with their $60,000+ land cruisers & such, the ute got through the creek but the G 60 didn't even look like it & it was on 35's, so it turned back while the ute went on to slide down the next big down hill & smash its bull bar in on a big boulder at the bottom rendering the whinch useless, it then couldn't haul it's big fat heavy A%$E out of the creek crossing it had just slid into, SCREWED!!!!!

The reason I was there earlier.........I was with the Newcastle Suziki club & they had all driven through there!!!!!! except me, I chickened out, on std tyres & suss, I turned back & drove back through that same creek were the G 60 couldn't even get across in one direction!!!!

Put me in a Sierra with 33" muddies, 12" of suss, travel & lockers any day!!!! That's why I can't sell her, Iv'e had it since 86' & modified the crap out of it specifically for Barrington, trouble is now it is like driving a bulldozer & when you do get it stuck, You are in DEEP SH%T!!

Mick.  I have deleted much of your quote but in essence, I agree.  No matter what vehicle you have the basics remain the same.  Departure and approach angle, how much overhang (Zooks don't have much) and I remember the Mt Seaview 4WD as I was there for the Jeep Jamboree in 1992.  I think insurance has knakered them.

The connection between four wheel drive touring and camp ovens remains strong to this day as in the drovers day.  All we have to do is have the capacity to carry our addiction....
