Been doing a lot of thinking lately.  What with the downturn in the economy and the failing of the stock market, I like a lot of other people have been affected significantly.

I need to start spending more time in the quiet of the bush.

I have a camper trailer sitting in the garage that hasn't seen a camping trip since last Christmas and before that around early last year.  Do I keep it or let it go?  You have most likely seen it here http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/homeawayfromhome.htm

For many years my away from home was a tent.  Everything for camping fitted in the back of a 4X4 and was used often.

Should I buy a small tent and the associated gear for less than one tenth of the price of the camper and get out more often.  I do miss the bush.

Should I forego the prestige of the Suzuki with it's leather seats and climate control for something more practical that will take me more places?

Interested in other peoples thoughts on where they are at.

Like most of us the current downturn in the economy has me wondering what is in the future.
I never have been  well off and the current situation ensures this will continue.
Since I lost most of my gear in the Feb floods, replacing it led me to rethink what I really needed.

A comfy fold up stretchers, swags  and sleeping bags
Folding table and chairs
Tucker box
30 x 20 foot silver tarp, poles , pegs and ropes, as I find tents confining hot and restrictive up here
Box for cooking gear, Camp oven, fry pan, billy, utensils etc
Good quality esky
My extravagance is a 3 way Chescold fridge/freezer that runs for 3 weeks on a 9 kg gas bottle for extended trips.
Also have one of those $20 gas stoves with disposable gas canisters great for a quick billy boil
With this gear I can set up a comfy camp for a weekend or a couple of weeks for 2 people.

If I throw all of this in the back of my 1986 Navara the total cost is well under $5000 including the ute with a reconditioned motor. If I hook my boat up the value doubles.
This setup satisfies my needs, but would not suit everyone.
So have a think about your needs not the wants
Kev

I thought a couple of times earlier this year about selling the 99 TD patrol for a near new one. Couldn't quite come to spending the 35K needed to make it happen.
In hind sight I am glad I stuck it out with the old one.

Still happy I bought the Kimberley though.

It may be my long time tourer if things don't get better in the near future.
Most of the lads i've met on this forum are very resourceful..Should we get hit with really tough times..we won't starve and we will get by.

Aussie is a solid as a rock..
Can't say the same for most of the rest of the world though.

My thoughts are you get one lap of the track and that's all.
If something makes you happy then go for it. If I really want something that make's me happy then I buy it even if that means the credit card bit.

One thing I don't want to say at the end of my life is I wish I had done...............! Life's really pretty short.
In saying that I know when to draw the line and pull my horns in.

Sooty your right in what you say and I applaud you for your theory, you have had some tough luck but with a few of the things that you want/need your as happy as a bird.

As far as loosing due to the ecomomy it ain't lost until you sell.!!!Been there before.

You know Kemo Sabe's I spent some time recently with Jono at Milmerran and with a roast dinner/box of greenies I felt "Slicker than Cat #### on a Linoleum Floor". I was beaming for days after. (Once the headaches settled)

So Derek I reckon if what you have makes you happy stick with it, if you'd prefer to camp in a tent and return to the basics then do that. I'm afraid I can't cut it on the ground anymore so the Kimberley stays Grin

The hardest part is staying motivated to go & camp. If the whole ordeal is too difficult & time consuming then you won't go often. So keep it organised give the troops a call and get a group together. All the more fun.
I still crave for a piece of beef like you cooked out at Miles (Hint) Grin

My outlook won't be everyone's, some are driven by money, some by other types of success. I'm after happiness and health with my family & friends.

My opinion keep the Camper & Zuke and set aside some dates in advance & go camping no matter what.

Of my box now
Regards Skip Smiley
