Derek,

Keep the camper trailer as it is likely the most versitile set up you are going to have.

You can always get a tent to just throw in the auto and go for a very basic set up.

But if you are going to a big gathering and want a bigger set up you just have to hook up the trailer and toss in the gear you need.

Now here is something to think about. What of the forest fires that have happened in the past down there. We are currently having some fires by Los Angeles that are forcing people out of their homes. Having that trailer means that you can pack up the important stuff and live in comfort for a long time. You could even set up your own relief station or even join an existing one and have all the cooking gear to help a number of people who are living in their auto's and have no way to get a hot meal because they do not have a camp oven.

I have a trailer that I use for camping that is by no means as fancy as yours. I have been rolling around ideas for some time about how to improve it for many things and your trailer is what I am looking to copy. No one, that I have found, sells that kind of trailer here in the states. A similar trailer is avalable but it is more specialized. The most common camping trailer here is a large box with wheels and your kitchen/bath/bed all built in; a shack on wheels, yuck, that is not camping. Don't get me started on RV's with slide outs.

My vote is to keep the camper trailer, it has more uses then you give it credit for. Smiley

Best,
Duncan

Should I buy a small tent and the associated gear for less than one tenth of the price of the camper and get out more often.I do miss the bush.

Hi Derek,

Would selling the CT really have the effect of you getting out there more often?  I doubt it.  Wherever you go, you go with the intention of enjoying the bush, the solitude, the travel, the relaxation etc ... and sleeping on the ground is an option with a tent or CT.

You can chain the CT to a tree and nick off into the tough stuff and hoist your tent or roll out your swag when you get there ... have the best of both worlds.  The minimal amount you save by packing a tent & your gear in your vehicle isn't worth disposing of something you may not be able to acquire again further down the track.  Especially if the decision is driven by financial edginess.

I don't know about you but I think it's akin to a rites of passage thing ... I've done all the time I need to do on the hard ground or with a squishy airbed.

My camper trailer is really basic but it's my WigWam and a hearth.  I'd encourage you to keep yours if you are in doubt and look further into the future, when you might just find that you'd do LESS bush time because the body wants a bed and a bit of comfort ... e.g. your cosy CT.

That's my two bob's worth.  Wink

We recently put the camper/trailer up for sale and there seems to be heaps for sale at present and some imports are going cheap new I was told.  We only got one local looker and they didnt bid.  We decided we might upgrade to a poptop but wanted the ct sold first.

The moth has gone off for this week with a mate and boat and taken the tent and stretchers.  Will be interesting how he feels when he gets home regarding what he wants to do.

I would keep both if you can Derek circumstances change and you might need more space i.e. the ct.  Its funny how the bush calls us.
