Struth !
I was interested in the 11" Metters on eBay today, I bid big in the final moments but still got badly trampled in the stampede at the end. It went for $260 which was probably around its true value but too much for me.

You got a good deal TBF, quite a lot of cooks I know reckon Metters are the pick. As I said in a previous post Ned Winter likes them above Furphy's which he reckons are too heavy and are over-rated !

Yep PD, theres big money in that ole' iron these days.
But not to worry, have got a couple of old Metters earmarked in my will to you!

What I do reckon is that any decent Chinese oven, nicely seasoned (which applies to all) will cook just as well as the oldest, most valuable CO that you could ever find.

So is this ever increasingly popular forum encouraging not so much Camp Oven Cooking in Australia, but more Camp Oven Collecting in Australia?
Just look at the prices they now go for compared to acouple of years ago.

I recall when this forum was first kicked off by Derek, his favorite oven type was the steel Bedourie oven. (happy to be corrected here Derek)

Recently a mate asked me to buy him a CO, and could I please "break it in" for him. ($38 el cheapo, but picked a good fitting lid!)
Well tonight it is cooking its third roast (rolled beef) and on Tuesday, when I see him, its his and ready to go.
For me, bugger that olive oil, three times in the barbeque oven caper. Just a waste of gas.

But having said all that, its bloody good that an increasing interest is there, all those old ovens have a story.
Possibly a few of the newer buyers of the old ovens have recollections of growing up with them and a bit of nosalgia kicks in.

Do things change, only to remain the same? Undecided
mikel

mikel, you are probably right there along with the rest of your post.
Myself after losing my gear had a need to replace it, My recant  Lewis and Clark purchases are performing well. The surprise acquisition of my suspected Albion filled the need an old one.

Memories live on though. An oven handed down, used as a youngin when rabbit trapping to roast, bake, stew, fry, curry, casserole, and burn the quarry has to have some nostalgic value.
That old bit of CI cooked everything from Beef & Bandicoot, Steak & Stew, Rabbit & Roo, Dumplings & Damper, Pig & Piklets so has a bit of history attached to it.
So  mate perhaps that explains my need for a bit of old stuff.
Kev

What a shock, I cannot believe that an 11" Metters oven would sell for such a ridiculous price! Answer me this, I purchased an 11" Metters oven at an auction not too long ago and I paid $100 for it, not a bad price but I would not have paid any more for it. Now I see this oven that sold for $260 on ebay, so what would an 11" Metters oven be worth now????????????I don't think that if I listed it today that it would bring $260 for a second time, what do ya reckon??
I've noticed that another 11" oven has been listed on ebay supposedly a Metters but It doesn't look like one to me, so will this oven sell for the same price?? I don't think so. Ebay can be a trap and entice people to bid in the heat of the moment and consequently push the price up on items that aren't necessarily worth that much.
I am still a firm believer that you will find reasonably priced Aussie made camp ovens out there if you put the effort in and remember that ebay isn't the only place to find a good cast iron treasure.
Anyway I'm off to a swap meet tomorrow who knows what treasures await.
Until the next chapter,
Astro.

The pitted but quite usable 12" Metters I bought for $85 last weekend was a steal but I won't go to goal over it. Also available a similar oven with 11 branded on the lid & side  but no brand name for $75. It may have been a Metters but the lid was very pitted on the lip & couldn't see a brand name.

Good luck Astro
I may get to the Caboolture markets in the morning.
Only ever seen junky mismatches there.

Derek's had luck in the past though

With reference to the 11" oven on eBay at present, how can the seller claim it to be a Metters if it doesn't have a name on it ? I reckon this is false advertising.
Like Astro says, "Who knows what treasures await". I picked up a genuine Furphy 14" in Mickey Mouse condition last weekend, it's just a matter of looking and asking.
