They aren't really all that expensive.  Would be even better if they were not aluminium.  I am not sure about cooking in aluminium these days

This guy has been making these for years.  In fact I was told at Millmerran that up until this year he had been making the aluminium lids for the Furphy Ovens that were given away as prizes at the Festival.

All of the Furphy lids in the photo below are made of aluminium by this guy.

So you havent had anything to do with aluminium ovens Derek?
You would think it would eliminate the need to season, you could probably scrub completely clean.
The only problem I could see if that were the case would be you probably wouldnt get the same flavour.

Your thoughts?

They look VERY expensive for the end result...

My mother-in-law fell down a wishing well, I was amazed.       I never knew they worked.

I think most kitchens gave up using aluminium saucepans years ago due to the aluminium leaching in to food and the possibility of this causing alziemers disease.

So nope I have never used an ally camp oven.

Derek,  that's been disproved.  & hey, Spirit Deer @ IDOS regularly uses aluminum when weight is a factor.  As do others over there who reach their  campground via canoe or horse.

I don't say it's a lot of Camp Oven cooks there, but I certainly see aluminum ovens mentioned  a couple of times a month, more in summer.

If you are going to use aluminum cookware of any kind I would suggest that you use the anodized aluminum type. Anodized aluminum apperently does not leach any aluminum into your food.

As far as alziemers disease being cause by aluminum or aluminum build up in the brain being a by product is still unknown. Aluminum is a known toxic substance with other health effects other than possible alziemers.

As far as a substitute for Cast Iron, it is not, it has a lower melting point (660.37 °C / 933.52 K / 1220.666 °F), uneven heat distribution, will not build up a renewable non-stick coating, and gives a metalic flavor to acidic foods cooked in it (unless anodized).

Do I use it? No, I use cast iron or stainless steel.

Best, Duncan
