G’day Cobbers,

I just joined up and thought I’d provide some background on me and my interest in cast ironware. I’m married with one teenage son. We live in the country. Our everyday household cooking stove is made of cast iron and wood fired, as is the lounge room heater. The latter is also connected to the hot water service and provides all our household hot water requirements. Both stoves are fuelled with wood cut from the property.
I enjoy cooking, particularly with good quality cast ironware and do most of the cooking in the family. My wife is also a reasonably competent cook however she finds cooking a chore and prefers to leave it to me.
We regularly go camping, even during winter in the Victorian Alps and we always take along our camp ovens. I own a number of camp ovens and some of them have been in the family for many years. I have very fond memories as a child sitting around the campfire after a long day’s fish or hunt, watching the fading sun’s rays gradually sink behind the mountains, yarning with my father and grandfather, while the delicious aroma of baking scones or sizzling trout, permeated the air from one of our lovely old family heirlooms.  Tongue
My young bloke also loves to cook, particularly when we are away camping. He takes great relish in using the camp ovens to bake a wide variety of cakes, sponges and biscuits. Most of which he manages to consume with little help from anyone else… I sometimes think he’s got hollow legs!!   Grin  I’m not sure what it is, but camp oven cooking appears to be a great conduit for teaching kids to cook. I know with my bloke, he only ever really seems to be interested in cooking when he’s out in the bush and now after 10 years or so, he is quite accomplished, whereas without that exposure, I don’t think he would be anywhere near as good.
Anyway this looks a great site with lots of interesting information. I look forward to reading your posts and perhaps participating in the discussion.

Kind regards,
Jacko

G'day Jacko, Welcome mate

Sounds like the life we love.

My little man is just four and I got him his first 15" Billmans CO for Christmas. Hoping he can follow the the same steps yours has. He can't lift it yet but hey he's got an oven, thats a start.

Lookin forward to sharing a yarn and some ideas.

Cheers

Jono

Welcome Jacko,

I hope your going to share some photos with us.

My grandson is keen and although the MOTH says he will never go camping with them again I am sure he will weaken.  Its such a great environment for kids to learn.

I have gone into a cooking slump over the summer and xmas period and would have to say I am still very much a learner, the MOTH has a go and is happy with what he cooks.  At our previous home with had a CI Cooker built into the bbq and cooked bread, scones etc in it and used the top as extra cooking for larger bbqs.  In winter the MOTH and neighbour would fire it up and sit outside and have a beer or two in peace from us women and all the kids.  Happy days.

I'm jealous Jacko, can you adopt me. Reminds me a bit of my Pops place when I was growing up. What a life.
Welcome mate, look forward to hearing from you.
