As you would be aware there isn't a lot of information available regarding the camp ovens available in Australia.  Their identification, history and the information available is few and far between.

Here on COCIA we have the perfect opportunity to record what is known to us and thereby record for the future the information we have.

Please post what you know but keep the headings pertinent so that others can easily find the information.

This should not be a general chat board but specific to camp ovens.

Cheers

I noted this years ago from a post/s on this forum gleaned from the "wise ones".
Here goes.
Metters Ovens ceased business in 1939 so any ovens that bear that mark are as old or older than 1939.

C.C. Harding cast ovens between 1927 and 1979.

Albion ovens are stamped on the base and the lid and they stopped casting in 1907.

Please feel free to dispute this timeline and I will not disagree.   Cool  I have no expertise on Furfy ovens at all........ Tongue

If you have a Holcroft 6 pint saucepan, they came with a tin lid.....

cheers

Yeah mate, I have 4 Harding ovens, 10, 13, 15, 17 and all was cast to order bar the 17 I bought off my mate. I am not sure how old the 17 is, if I can find my mate again I will find out. It could be from the 70's or 80's. The oldest of the others is the 13 and it was made in 1994, I had it stamped on the lid. My 15 was given to me by a friend and after he had it for a year and realised that one he couldn't cook, and two he definitely couldn't cook he gave it to me for a camp oven dinner cooked properly and probably a few beers. I originally ordered the 15 for him so it was like my oven anyway. That was after 1994 and after that I had a 10 inch made and I remember having some others made for friends and a wedding gift to my sister of a personalised 13 about 1998 I think. So the Harding's went until about 2000.

Hardings may have gone longer but not C.C. Hardings as far as I know.  The foundry was passed on in the family hence the reference to "C.C.".
Cast iron history is very hazy at best.

I wish I could find the reference.  Others on here could help out with dates and such but,  I think C. Harding was the Father and the foundry passed onto C.C. Harding which was one of the sons.
That would make your ovens older as they preceded the handing on.
Old brain working overtime here..... Huh

Oz have a look at this thread regarding the Harding ovens. There are a couple of posts by the grandson of CC Harding. http://www.aussiecampovenforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1232265841

From my research I have never agreed that the Albion foundry closed in 1907 but rather in the early 1920's when it was dismantled and became part of United Metal Industries in Brisbane.

I have an old sales catalogue for Aga Rayburn stoves, probably from the late 1960's (dimensions shown in metric).

On the back page is shown camp ovens, 254, 305, 356mm (4.5 - 10.8kg.) which would equate to 10,12 & 15".

Of interest to me is the picture which looks identical to a Metters, legs, ears and lid.

Also listed is a picture of Potjie pots, listing 9 sized 3/4 - 14 the smallest 2.95kg. the largest 23.81kg.
Quite a pot. Roll Eyes

Currently on Gumtree. I saw this oven listed with some other stuff for way less than this a couple of days ago. They must have done some homework and changed the price.

I may have my history bass awkard..... Sad  but I still wonder how many foundries took plugs from popular size ovens and such and cast them under their name...just wondering.

KB, He has it the wrong way around as the 053 number was the old phone number. Also I have a 17" C Harding and Sons oven still with the old 053 phone number. In that linked thread BillyBushCook has photos of 17" ovens with both the old and new phone numbers. Interesting as maybe the C Harding ovens with the 053 phone numbers were made during the time that the name change occurred on the ovens.
