myself and my girlfriend travel around nswa fair bit and we have just purchased a spun steel oven. we are both keen cooks at home so we are now looking forward to learning sOme camp oven skills. any advice will be welcomed.
can someone tell us ow to treat our new oven before using.
as we are on a motorbike any tips on keeping cooking items to a minimum would be really appreciated, not a huge amount of space on the bmw.

Thanks

Andrew and Sarah

There are as many ways to season an oven as there are opinions.

I recently aquired a new spun steel oven and seasoned it at the Kingsthorpe GOG day.

I placed the oven (and lid) on the fire and turned it around to see the metal change colour.  The fire was nice and hot.

I then took the oven away fromt he fire and sprayed canola oil (spray can cheapo oil variety) over the surfaces.  It smoked hike billy-o..

I let the oven cool and then placed it one the heat again and repeated it.

...

It seasoned up beautifully, and I  have cooked numerous times in it again and it gets better.

Spun steel is different to cast iron as far is it is made, and means you can handle it differently.  I am told I can wash mine with soapy water but I still cant bring myself to it..   Embarrassed

Just add this bit of info to the vast stores of info out there..

Start off with Dereks information: http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/campovencooking.htm#51994680  and give it a burl....

A furphy, is Australian slang for a rumour, or an erroneous or improbable story.  You would never get anything but the plain honest dinky-di truth here... I promise!!!!  Yup, hand on my heart, promise, true blue, uh-huh true dinks, dead set!!

G'day Andrew and Sarah,

Welcome!!!

Sounds like you're already on the right track with acquiring a spun steel oven. There a great little unit to cook with, particularly if you're on the wallaby and travelin light.

I hope  enjoy it here
